Local drummers welcome the crowd gathered at the Serka Zong area of Asia in Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Jay Rasulo begins his remarks by describing Disney's Animal Kingdom as more than a theme park. "It is the physical embodiment of The Walt Disney Company's dedication to wildlife and enviroment around the globe."

Several special guests were honored as part of the opening ceremonies. Dr. Wangari Maathai who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her efforts to promote ecologically viable social, economic and cultural development in Kenya and throughout Africa.

Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton founded the charity "Save the Elephants" following his discovery that the elephant population was halved between 1979 and 1989. He helped to bring about the world ivory trade ban.

Dr. Jane Goodall whose studies have lead to amazing discoveries in the field of primatology. She was unable to attend today's events. She was represented by Chase Pickering of Roots N Shoots -- an organization that was established by Dr. Jane Goodall founded on the belief that knowledge leads to compassion, which inspires action.

Actress and model Isabella Rossellini whose lifetime passion for animals has been realized in her service as President of the Howard Gilman Foundation as well as in her role on the board of the Wildlife Conservation Network.
