LaughingPlace.com Turns 10
Posted Friday, July 31, 2009 at 3:11p Pacific Time

I feel so old today. Isn't the Internet this new fangled thing? And here we are celebrating 10 years of LaughingPlace.com. That's right, LaughingPlace.com turns 10 years old tomorrow, August 1st. It's really, really hard to believe we've been doing this for 10 years. What started as an interesting computer programming project has turned into my life. And in all honesty, if you'd asked me if I'd be doing LaughingPlace.com 10 years later, I would have laughed. No way, no way, no way. At the time my work history showed I liked to do many different things, and while I may have said LP would survive as a hobby for 10 years, it certainly wouldn't have remained the focus of my life for so long. And yet, here we are, and I'm nothing but happy about it.

And why wouldn't I be? LP has provided my family and friends opportunities I never would have imagined 10 years ago. I can remember standing on the "other side of the ropes" at Disney events wishing I could have a better view, and now I've had the best view. I remember seeing Disney legends and celebrities wishing I had the opportunity to talk to them, and now I've talked to the best of them. I remember wondering how someone got the opportunity to go to a Hollywood red carpet movie premiere. Now I've been and our friends Doug and Dave go regularly. But best of all, I remember thinking how amazing it would be to do a job I love, to be able to do it at home and do it with the person I love the most, my wife Rebekah, and for the past 10 years, I've happily found out it is, indeed, amazing. And with the birth of our first son, Gideon, last February, I realize how truly lucky I am to be able to be with him all day every day and watch and help him grow up. Thanks LP.

It would, unfortunately, be impossible for me to thank all of the people who've made LP what it is over the past 10 years. The numbers are simply too large and my memory to bad. But I do want to mention a few that stand out for specific reasons. To those I haven't mentioned, please don't take it as a slight in any way.

After I realized my little programming project could perhaps turn into something more, there was a group of friends that met with Rebekah and I to discuss what this might be. Some of these went on to work with us for a while, some didn't, but all were very important in making this happen. Most of our meetings would take place in the Golden Horseshoe at Disneyland in between Billy Hilly and the Hillbillies shows and it's there that John Frost, Kaz Liput, Bob Barber, Dave Mastanich, Rebekah and myself figured out what LP would be. So I specifically thank the five of them as well as the list below.

  • Dave Mastanich (again): The man who takes cares of the boards along with a couple of anonymous helpers
  • Doug Marsh: When we left the west coast for the east we pretty much left Disneyland in his hands and he does an amazing job.
  • Ken Pellman: You can't have a website without discussion boards, can you? For a while we did, but Ken pushed hard for us to add them ASAP.
  • The crew of the LPP: FanBoy and Captain Jon. Nothing about LP is as much fun as doing the podcast.
  • Lee MacDonald and Lindsay Cave: Publishers of Tales from the Laughing Place Magazine which gave us some real credibility at a time when we needed it.
  • The Legend, Bob Gurr: For reasons I still don't know agreeing to write a column for this unknown website so many years ago
  • Kirby Holt: A rock solid writer almost from day one. And he makes it look so easy!
  • Denise Owsley, Linda Kaplan, et. al who do the hard work at the LP Store
  • Denise Preskitt: Making sure we still have WDW pics even though new baby Gideon takes quite a bit of time.
  • Mark Wharff: He takes care of the trivia contests and does a great job.
  • Greg Maletic: He pushed me to start blogging which means now I write at least sometimes.
  • Rhett Wickham: Because he writes so well about topics I know nothing about
  • Rick West: He gave us our first change at a media event covering Tarzan's Treehouse for his publication Theme Park Adventure. That helped us a lot.
  • I57, Ursula, Lulu and others: For making the LP meets so memorable
  • Mouse Ear Vacations and Howard Johnson: Anaheim: The reasons should be obvious :)
  • The LP Community: Without mentioning specific names - those who spend any amount of time on the boards know who the regulars are who have set the tone for the past 9+ years

Of course, the biggest thank you goes to my wife Rebekah. Not only do I get to be married to the most wonderful woman in the world, I get to work with her, too. We're together almost all day, every day which is a great thing. Is it any wonder people call us Doobekah?

For those new to LP, I recommend a topic on the Discussion Boards created last year called Your best LP memories. To quote myself from last year ... When we started LP we knew we could create a website that served the Disney fan community and helped us make a living. That was our goal. But the stuff in this topic was stuff we never expected to occur. Thanks so much for sharing, everyone. If you haven't read it, I encourage you to do so by clicking here.

Finally, I want to officially announce our 10th Anniversary Official LaughingPlace.com Annual Meet. Normally our meet is held on or around July 17th, Disneyland's Birthday. This year, it wasn't (you may have noticed). At the request of many in our community our 10th anniversary meet will be held in December this year on Candlelight weekend. Specifically, Sunday, December 6th at 11:00 a.m. at Naples Ristorante (upstars) in Disneyland's Downtown Disney. At this time, that is the only information we have available. But in the next couple of weeks we will things and begin selling tickets. Until then, just mark that date and we hope you can join us. 10+ years in the making - it promises to be a good one!

Thanks everyone!

Doobekah? Really? You had to move all the way out to Florida to get a Hollywood Couple Nickname? Huh.

It's hard to believe it's been 10 years!

My thanks for the acknowledgment. I am honored and humbled to have been a part of the inception of LP as well to have seen it grow into such an amazing online community, print mag and source of all things Disney. It could never have flourished so beautifully in lesser hands than the two of yours.

You and Rebekah are two of the most incredible people I have had the fortune to know in my life and are always and forever in my heart. Hopefully I will get to meet the newest addition to your family soon!

Congratulations on 10 fabulous years of LaughingPlace.com and cheers to many, many more!

I'm just gettin' the news - congratulations to doobie and rebekah on TWO impressive achievements - for creating this wonderful site ten years ago and for keeping it up and running all these years.

If I didn't have WE to vent in, my head would have probably exploded long ago. My head thanks you too.

I appreciate your efforts on our behalf.

Or why DCA does or does not suck. Heck, SPirit and I would have to wear armour when visiting the WDW crowd.

And in the Japanese section and Hong Kong section, I imagine it being like a bunch of post grads with goatees in the coffee house. Lol

Kiz, I remember, after telling my family the kids had come into the world, LP was the next place to go. Because of some of my polarising views, I now use facebook more for personal news, but this is definately my cyber home still (sorry folks).

As for posts #42 and #44... I gave myself that moniker a few years ago, when all I ever talked about the Villains and tried to cause mischievous chaos on the boards. :)

Oy...could you imagine if LP-Ville was real? Offenders would have to wear a scarlet "ADMIN" on their clothes, we'd have set meeting times every day, and everyone would be bickering and arguing on what should be done with DL's Tomorrowland :)

I agree with 5BR that this site has become so much more than just a Disney fan site.

We are a community and whilst I don't post in community much whenever something important happens (good or bad) my first thought is to share it here.

I was lucky enough to get someone to record me singing on tuesday and even before I'd done it my thoughts were how can I get LPers to hear it, even moreso than my family. As soon as I have the finished article I'll get it online somewhere.

So thanks again for the community you've inspired. If only we could all live in LP-ville for real!!!

Well, it's been 2 weeks since the inception of this post, and still the acclaim and lauds appear. I want to join the celebratory crowd that has gathered her to congratulation Doobie and Rebekah and Gideon on 10 years (I can't believe it's been 10 years) of good times and sharing of all things Disney.

I was just a neophyte to the computer when I found Laughingplace, after googling Disneyland for fun. Couldn't believe my eyes when I found this websited, I think I intuited that this was the place I was looking for. Thus was born my knowledge of websites (I first went to Crystal Cathedral's Hour of Power website).

It's been a while now since I've met with with the Nurmis but hope to some day again. Now, I'm planning a mini-meet with Tink-mobile and Snow-white, 2 awesome LP'ers.

So, for all you do, LaughingPlace, thank-you and may we look forward to the next 10 years.

I agree with uk in #34: do you people not have homes? Don't any of you have jobs? Bills to pay? Mouths to feed?

Ahem™.

Seriously, I thank Doobie and Rebekah for opening up this special Magic Kingdom of sorts and welcoming me into their family of assorted Disney fans, ranging from new and casual to extreme and extreme hardcore.

This site has become one of my favorite addictions and with it, I've been able to meet a lot of devoted fans of all different ages and lifestyles, some CMs and some who don't get to go the parks that often. I've learned all sorts of secrets and tidbits (Churros were Walt's favorite snack, the Mansion uses real ghosts, the backside of water and the Hidden Mickey in Light Magic), and have experienced some of my best times at DL with you guys.

I also got to know the LPers when they're off the boards, and told us some of their personal stories, whether it was about triumph or tragedy, a promotion at work, their child's first day of school, or even personal beliefs pertaining to politics or religions. As much as I try to maintain the "Disney fantasy" and stay in "character" most of the time, it is quite interesting to see others stray from our mutual love of the Mouse and journey into unchartered territories and scary places.

Thanks again for creating a place where we can rant and rave about Disney, or just blow off steam...you've created a wonderful solace for all of us. I've laughed with and/at others, and I hope I've done the same (although I know I've irritated many, I'm hoping that there aren't and/or won't be any long-term resentments or grudges).

What else can I say that hasn't already been said before? We've seen the kids grow up and move on to college, or other veterans silently move on and make the occasional cameo. A portion of the Bay Area LPers were featured in our local newspaper...we've met current and future Disney legends...this site has brought so many people together and started many lifetime friendships that one can't possibly contain it in words. Well, maybe two. Thank you.

Man, congrats Doobie and Rebekah! As I read about how you guys have been able to have a job for this long that you truly enjoy and that fits around the rest of your life and your family, I feel very inspired as well as happy for you both.

I admittedly dropped out of the LP loop a long while back, and I only have time nowadays to check in occasionally. But I can still most definitely say that I have taken a LOT from this site over the years, and especially back in the early years, and for that I'm very thankful.

Keep it up... :)

Sorry I'm late to the party!

I turn 10 myself in October!

I just want to thank the Academy, my agent...

In all seriousness, I want to say a huge thanks to Doobie and Rebekah and all my LP friends for being here ALL THE TIME (seriously, do some of you not have homes to go to?!).

I'll never forget the day I met Doobekah, as a humble UK LPer I never thought that would happen. I have met some fantastic people through LP, I've won (and lost) a Golden Doobie and I've had the time of my life.

I really hope I can sell a kidney and make it over in December!!!

Being much older than most here; but still younger than a few, I am pretty computer illiterate. Goodness sake, I still have dial-up. So I only found LP 4 years ago through POTCHMC33 and Rivkah86. Just a few days earlier and I could have met up on the 50th.
I never thought I would make internet friends but I sure have here. We have offered travelers a free place to stay and have had the favor returned.
When I visit my daughter in Seattle; I have lunch with LP buddies. And who would have thought that I would find weight-loss support on a Disney board?
How great it is to have friends who do not scowl and say, "You're going to Disneyland again?!? WHY??!"
Thank you so much Doobekah. I so look forward to meeting you in December.

While I don't post anymore, I truly can say that LP has had a huge impact on our family in the past 10 years! We've been in since the beginning; reading the 'board-less' LP while researching for a Disneyland trip.. discovering the boards shortly after their inception (not even knowing what they were because we were so computer illiterate, lol!)

We've met lifelong friends.
Had amazing vacations.
Sent a key lime pie by Fed-Ex.
Watched LPers grow up, graduate and get married.
Been welcomed into homes and welcomed LPers into ours :)
Mourned the loss of loved LPers. (PMHartman comes to mind first of all. I'm sure she's whoopin it up with a bunch of the Bonanza crew. :) )
Anticipated LP babies!
Watched my own kids grow up within this amazing community, and know that they have aunties and uncles and cousins far and wide.

We've never been to an LP meet, but I think we may just have to make it to the 10th anniversary one. Sounds like a BLAST.

Congratulations to Doobie, Rebekah, Dave (et al)... three people I absolutely consider among my best friends.

Much love,
C/

(as a side bar...Mouse Bear - you are VERY much missed in the Nurmi household. Please do email; robnurmi@gmail.com. We would LOVE to see you.)

Hi, Lulu!

Life has kept me pretty busy the last few years and I haven't had a lot of time for online stuff. However, I still check in every now and then to see what's going on. I don't have a lot to say that other's haven't already said, but with so many changes at DCA and the Resort as a whole, I can't seem to stay offline too long. :)

Hope all is well!

Doobie, I really enjoyed reading your blog. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us and especially the "history" of those who have been with you and Rebekah along the way. I loved reading about the beginning of LP and the companionship that is/was apparent from the very beginning.

LP is the first place I "go" with my morning cup of coffee. I could go on all day (I've been known to do that:) about the people I've met and the friendships and I've made both in person and online. I'll spare you that :)

Thank you and Happy Anniversary LP!

Great site, this Laughing Place..I sure hope it catches on.

Seriously, though, not only is this a great discussion board, but it's a great meeting place, too. Thank you so much for creating a world where everyone IS created equal.

I have been a member for awhile and have made a great big handful of great friends and aquaintences due to LP.

I recently had an issue with a poster and was so infuriated with their dishonesty that I seriously for the first time thought about not posting for awhile. But I had to reflect on all of the wonderful people that I've met here like murfsmom, imadlfan, the clones, disneylandfan8 and others. I don't always know how to express myself correctly on the boards, but friends like that will always have my back. - can't thank you enough for that.

Also, there's no greater feeling than to have an HM meet and tell the cast member "45" when she asks "how many?"!

Thank you Doobekah!! I can't wait for the day that Gideon has his own blog. Growing up Disney from the get-go may give him some great tools to work with!!

I have been hanging around LaughingPlace.com for about 6 years now and have loved and will continue to love every moment that I spend on your site. It's truly a joy and how could it not be with wonderful people like you and the Magical World of Disney?

Thank you for your hard work and keep it coming!! =)

what a great blog article, just sets the warm tinglies going. Thank you to Doobie, Rebekah, Dave and all the crew as well as our community members for the great memories over the last decade. (I wish I had signed on the message boards much earlier, but back in the 1st days we did not have a home computer and it was about sneaking a look at lunch time).

every trip has been much enriched thanks to the friendships LP has made possible. And each milestone we have all shared has made each experience a lot more enjoyable.

and even the drama that occasionally impacts, when looking back in retrospect, it is amazing to think a forum could have so much of an impact.

Some of our best friendships have been made on this board, and they span across the world.

Thank you again, and here is to many more we hope.

To Doobie, Rebekah, and everyone who has made Laughing Place available to all Disney fans:

Everyone above me has said exactly how I feel and not sure I can add much to it.

I've been lurking for years (thanks bubsmom!) and finally joined 3-28-08. I have met so many people from this website, through posting, 2 LP Meets, and even getting together here in Northern California for various events. Some I even call family. Knowing we all share a love of all things Disney is a wonderful feeling and it's great to come here to talk, learn and experience this community.

I am looking forward to meeting you and your family at the December meet. And, to be able to celebrate 10 wonderful years of LP!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart ♥

...Wendy

Wait, so I am to blame for the discussion boards? Yeah, I do remember telling you that they were needed.

Thanks for the recognition and congrats on making it this far. I am proud to be connected to LaughingPlace.com, and thankful to count you and your bride as our friends.

For many years, this website was your most beautiful creation together, but now that has been surpassed by your handsome little guy, and Kori and I are so happy for you.

Thanks for the platform and all of the opportunities.

Salutations Doobie, Rebekah, Gideon, Dave, and the whole LP Staff,

Congratulations on 10 years of making people's lives better by giving them a place to connect and to enrich their Disney experiences. Personally I want to thank you for your friendship and for helping me through a difficult and dark time in my life. I also appreciate the chance to write for the site. It was a wonderful experience and it gave me the opportunity to practice skills that I use all the time (as my school's yearbook advisor). I miss seeing you at Disneyland and I hope we can get together again someday.

God Bless all of you always,

Lee

Doobie and Rebekah, my fellow Floridians! I'll be celebrating my 2 year LP anniversary this November so I am a newbie around the parts and a new Disney fan for that matter!

This is my favorite website and I check it constantly everyday!

Let me tell you my school LP story, so I have employability skills, which means I help a teacher (Mrs.Charret, my sixth grade math teacher in this case) one period a day. Well if I get done with all the stuff I need to do for her, she lets me go on her computer.

I can't tell how many of the posts of mine have been at school, during 6th period. LOL!

Anyway, thanks for a great website! I will hope to meet up with the LPP crew in the near future. Ill tell you when im there.

HAVE FUN FOR ME AT THE GOLDEN DOOBIES! I hope to win one...someday...

Doobie, I can't thank you enough for enriching my life for these many years. I've met some wonderful people and made friends I would never have met. You have fostered a diverse and incredible community of people.

Doobie and Rebekah, you have made a huge memorable contribution and deserve many accolades.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Doobie, I thank YOU for giving me a place to play and to make life-long friends.

I met you and Rebekah through LP and a chance meeting by Buzz Lite-Snack, and he NEVER goes up and introduces himself! I met ilvdland through LP! I met LuLu and I-57 and NAPC and Kar2oonMan and family and threeundertwo, Lisan22, Pixie Glitter, SuziQ, oh, I have to stop...

I can go on and on, but really, it scares me that I would not have met these people otherwise.

Thank you, thank you, and thank you for helping at my wedding.

Thank you for making WE so that I'll never be banned from LP.

Thank you for hosting the meets and for the birth of the Golden Doobie. Thank you, all of LP, for my two Golden Doobies. I do cherish them.

Here's to another 10 years and more.
