Taking A Disney Cruise As Baby's First Vacation

Taking A Disney Cruise As Baby's First Vacation
Posted Friday, January 21, 2011 at 2:55p Pacific Time

On our first Disney Cruise we sailed with friends who had an infant son. Upon returning to Flounder's Nursery after dinner at the adults only Palo restaurant they found him sleepily nestled in Cinderella's arms as she sat in a nursery rocking chair. Mom was clearly tearing up as she recounted the moment. We weren't yet parents and it would be several years until we had the opportunity but when Gideon was about 8 months old we were so excited to take him on his first Disney cruise. It was a marvelous experience. In some ways I wish we'd been able to go even sooner. Cruise guidelines permit infants to travel beginning at 3 months

Gideon poses for photos at 8 months and at 20 months. Be aware the photo staff possesses some magic power to capture images you WILL want to take home with you. We always spend more than we plan for photos.

For our first cruise we had a verandah so while Gideon napped one of us could enjoy the ocean breezes. On later voyages we simply went with indoor staterooms as we found Gideon could often nap in his stroller at various locations around the ship. But most of the time I took advantage of the complete darkness afforded by the interior stateroom and was able to nap myself. A pack and play was setup in our room for him and while the room steward was happy to take it down and put it back up each day, we left it out for naps and to contain our new crawler. Bed rails are also available as your little one gets older. Leave your room in the morning and typically by the time you return bed's made and room refreshed. In the evening your bed sheets are turned down and welcoming you for a night's sleep.

Our room steward made a towel birthday cake for Gideon's 1st birthday

Cruising offers the chance to try new things in a Disney controlled environment. We thoroughly enjoyed a few hours at Castaway Cay beach, splashing in the water and sitting in the sand. Since the Disney ship is docked at the island its a simple stroll between beach and ship. On board ship, Gideon loved the infant splash zone with its warm water fountains specifically intended for cruisers in diapers. Thanks to the family environment we were able to take him to see the stage shows and discovered he really enjoyed them and were quite surprised by how long some held his attention. But when he began to lose interest, we were able to exit easily without creating much distraction.

Enjoying the warm, clear water at Castaway Cay with 8-month old Gideon

In those early months rest for the parents can be a challenge. On the Disney Cruise you work to avoid opportunities for rest and relaxation. For one thing the ship is only so big. So in morning after Giddy had his morning breakfast. Doobie would take him out to begin the day and I'd roll over and go back to sleep or have the chance to take a nice long shower and one time I scheduled a spa appointment. When I was ready to begin the day I’d take a simple stroll around the ship and we'd reconnect. This is even easier now with the new Wave on-ship portable phones. Despite the number of people on board, you can find large areas of the ship with relatively few people so we were often able to let Gideon roam various corridors without being underfoot.

Gideon crawls around the Lobby Atrium, he's near the top of the oval. (Daddy is standing under the staircase nearby so we could capture this moment)

You can also pamper yourself with a wide variety of tasty foods -- whether its your scheduled table dining with early rotation closer to 6p or late dining closer to 8p, grabbing a slice of pizza, burgers or wraps from the top deck locations or stopping by a casual buffet. Of, if none of those work, enjoy free 24 hr room service (gratuity not included). Gideon tried a few new veggies throughout our cruises. We scheduled the late dining and our little guy would drift off shortly after we arrived at the table yet he's awake for the stage show. Other families prefer to have the little ones awake at dinner and ready to drift to sleep during the show. But either way - there's no cooking or dirty dishes for you. You're on vacation.

The crew couldn't have been more helpful. A few of baby's favorite food items (banana, melon or yogurt) were often waiting for us at dinner or appeared shortly after our arrival. We could pick side items from our entrees we thought he might enjoy and he'd be able to sample them rather simply eat from a kids menu.

Gideon at Flounder's Nursery

Prior to our Disney cruise Gideon hadn't been watched by anyone other than grandparents so we were nervous about how he would react to Flounder's Nursery. They provide a pager so they can easily contact you throughout the ship should a need arise. But the ability to stay and watch him through a large one-way mirror shortly after we dropped him off set my mind at ease. He fussed at first but they quickly got him playing with various toys and the tears ended and we made our way to the adult-only Palo for dinner. Midway through our meal Daddy was able to pop back down and peek on him without disruption thanks to that mirror. He seemed to enjoy his time there and happily greeted the ladies who work at Flounder's when we spotted them at other times wandering the ship.

Cruise Director Clayton and Gideon

But the greatest memories we have of the Disney Cruises with our infant son have to be the character encounters and interactions with cruise staff. Aboard a Disney ship you have the opportunity to simply stumble upon the characters as you wander the ship. So be sure to always have your camera ready. And the crew come from all across the the globe ... Philippines, Jamaica, Hungary, Serbia, etc. and are separated from family and friends. We often heard how he reminded them of a brother, or cousin and even their own little ones they missed back home and for our brief cruise they became extended family. Games of peek a boo, hide and seek, and plenty of hugs were just a part of the fun.

Pirates night during our family's 3rd cruise

As you can see a Disney cruise has put a smile on all our faces each time we've have the opportunity to sail as a family. So if you're planning a Disney cruise -or- it’s something you're considering but still wonder if its right for you, I'm happy to answer any questions about a Disney adventure at sea with a little one.

The new mommy greatly enjoyed the complete relaxation found on the Disney Cruise.

I have heard there may be strollers available to rent on board. Does anyone have any experience doing this ? Did you find it to much of a hassle ? Were they appropriate for older kids (a two year old) were there plenty available ? It says there are limited numbers so I am still not sure weather it would be a good idea to just bring our own.

Also, unrelated, just how fancy smancy do people tend to dress for the formal night ? Is this a night of the normal dining rotation where everyone on board dresses up or just when/if you have reservations to Palo ? I am not a super dressy type so I want to be aware of what I should be prepared for.

Thanks so mcuh

Thanks Happy Haunt, good point about naps. I might be posting a few last minute questions here as I think of them...

Bring an Umbrella Stroller.. Work great for naps!! Plus, if the kiddie walks you can put your purchases in it instead! Even better!

We are headed out on our first Cruise ever in just under 2 weeks, I can't wait. We will be on the Disney Wonder to Alaska. We have a very active 2 year old. Does anyone think it is necessary to pack a small stroller with us ? I don't really want to bother lugging one along, but I am thinking it might be an idea for using when we are on shore. Thoughts ?

Great write-up! Sounds like it's a great way to take a vacation from having to take care of a baby all the time, yet still a great way to spend a ton of time with him. It makes me feel like I should steal someone's baby, just to take it on a cruise! : )

Thanks for the info guys! Can't wait for our first Disney cruise! That's great to know about the extra time at Flounders. I was thinking of doing Palos and was told that you can expect to be there for at least 2 1/2 hours. Now that I know we can book extra time once onboard, I get to keep my palo ressies!

I'll step in on this one. You're allowed to prebook up to 18 hours of total time. However, once you're on the ship, you can book as much time as you want. They just want to make sure all the time isn't taken with prebooking. If you know the times you want him watched, I'd recommend prebooking - it does no harm and it can be changed or canceled on the ship. We've always done a combination of prebooking and booking on the ship with changes and cancellation throughout and never had a problem and never been told a slot is sold out. I'm sure they do sometimes, but in our 4-cruise experience it has not been an issue.

One other tip since you mentioned a movie. There are first run movies on the ship (only Disney, Touchstone, etc), and because it's a low-key, general uncrowded, no additional fee thing, one of the things I loved to do was to go to go to a movie with him. On the first cruise when he was 7 months I'd go when he was asleep. He generally slept through without a problem and if he woke up and got noisy, I'd leave and it's no big deal. On the later cruises I'd go with him awake and just stay as long as he could handle. It's easy to sit in back and leave when necessary. It was kind of a good way to introduce him to movie going without any frustration about losing money.

I'm glad you're going to give Flounders a try. Check in on him as much as you need to. I think your mind will be put at ease pretty quickly. I know ours was.

Doobie.

Rebekah-
Prior to reading what you had posted, I wasn't going to let him go to flounders. I wasnt sure what kind of care he was going to receive, etc. I feel so much better hearing about your experience and knowing that your precious little guy was well tended to. I now feel comfortable leaving him in the care of the Disney "nannies." A friend of mine told me to let him go, let him have a good time, that it's his vacation too. She said that while he's in flounders to go and do all the things you don't get to do as a Mommy. Take a nap, (I like that one) Read a book while sipping a coffee from the cove cafe, sit quitely on the balcony and ocean watch, or catch a movie (I cant remember the last time I saw a movie) The more I thought about the more I realized it's going to be great. He may even make a little friend or two and I'll get some much needed R&R.

I did have one question for you. I read that You're allowed 18 hours total time for the 7 night cruise. Do I have to sign him uup ahead of time for his hours or do we just drop him off? How does that work exactly?

Hey Jenn31. I didn't mention it in my blog posting but our dining companions on a subsequent cruise had a daughter only 1 month older than our son -- they were both very close to a year old at the time. They were nervous about dropping her off at Flounders and also were very pleased with her care. They stopped by a few times to poke in and see her through the one way glass without disturbing her. What I really appreciated was the level of communication they provide through the pager. When we dropped our son off we were given a pager.

On one occasion Gideon was crying (I can't recall what had prompted it) and they weren't able to calm him as quick as they'd like so they paged us. They said he'd been fussy and bottle didn't help but he wasn't crying heavily. My husband opted to go and get him but by the time he reached the Nursery Gideon was already back to playing quite happily. It was nice to know that they wouldn't just let him cry and cry... and also that we could easily get to him as the ship isn't terribly large. The Nursery is pretty much in the middle of the ship.

I hope that helps. Please feel free to ask any other questions you have about cruising with a young one. And pamper yourself -- I recommend the Rainforest Spa. Its $15 per day I believe. Really nice way to unwind. I tried a spa sampler on one cruise -- facial and massage. I liked the massage portion more but wasn't really experienced with either so it was great way to get a taste of each.

Thanks for posting this! I'm debating that very question (should I take my little one on the 7 day wonder mexico cruise) when I found this blog post. I think one of my biggest fears as a parent is will he be safe in flounders? Will he be well looked after and tended to? He's never been looked after by someone else other than myself or grandma/grandpa.

I didn't know about the one sided mirror, I think that's WONDERFUL! You've definately put some of my fears to rest.

Very interesting to see how the cruise can accommodate the toddler. Loved the pictures, too, Rebekah.
