Jack Rorex
Location: Above the Market House
Inscription: Buena Vista Construction Co. - Jack Rorex - Ivan Martin - Cash Shockey
Jack Rorex worked on the construction of Disneyland.
Alastair Dallas: Jack was the head of construction for the studio in the late 40s,
early 50s. He built the 20,000 Leagues sound stage in 1953 (the one with the concrete pool
for water scenes) and the project team for that, which included Wheeler & Gray,
structural, and (I believe) J. S. Hamel, mechanical, went on to do Disneyland.

Herb Ryman was an art director for the studios before joining WED. He did the famous early
rendering of Disneyland which had Adventureland on the east side adjacent to Tomorrowland
(the painting can be found in the Disney Gallery). He also worked on the design of New
Orleans Square and Sleeping Beauty Castle. Many of his works can be found in the Disney
Gallery and the Disneyland Hotel. Herb also came out of retirement to contribute art for
the Indiana Jones Adventure.

Art Director who worked on Tomorrowland.
Alastair Dallas: I don't know much about him, but he was (one of) the art director(s)

called "Tormented." I saw the "film" on Mystery Science Theater.

E. G. Upjohn
Location: Above New Century Timepieces
Inscription: D. S. Gilmore, MD - E. G. Upjohn, MD
The New Century Timepieces store used to be an Upjohn Pharmacy. E. G. Upjohn was the one
time Chairman of the Board of Upjohn. Alastair Dallas: I would expect that E. G.
was the guy who agreed to sponsor the drug store. Walt was personally pressing business
acquaintances for cash in 1953-55 and I know Upjohn Pharmaceuticals was one of the first
he landed.

William T. Wheeler
Location: Above the Main Street Bank
Inscription: William T. Wheeler - John Wise - Structural Engineers
William Wheeler, and his company, the Wheeler & Gray Company, was a structural
engineer brought in to help with the construction of Disneyland.
Alastair Dallas: I interviewed Mr. Wheeler on the day of the Northridge earthquake
(Jan. 1994). Wonderfully generous with his time, he told me that his firm had been working
with Disney continuously since its founding in 1953. They had just completed the
realignment of the monorail track associated with Indiana Jones.

George Whitney
Location: Above the Market House
Inscription: Geo. Whitney - Guns
George Whitney was the only member of the original Disneyland design team with previous
amusement park experience.. He eventually became the manager of Fantasyland and also
worked on the Mickey Mouse Club Circus.
Alastair Dallas: Whitney's-at-the-Beach was a park on the Pacific Ocean side of the
San Francisco peninsula, just south of Cliff House. Other traditional park owners that
helped Walt included Ed Schott (Cinncinnati Reds owner Marge Schott's father, I believe).
George was in charge of Fantasyland on Black Sunday when guests began appearing on the
roof of Sleeping Beauty's Castle and on the first real day, Monday, when a gas leak sent
flames through the asphalt. So much for practical experience.

Ed Winger

Ed Winger was the supervisor of the Paint Department, Mill and Sign Shop.

John Wise
Location: Above the Main Street Bank
Inscription: William T. Wheeler - John Wise - Structural Engineers
John Wise was a structural engineer brought in to help with the construction of
Disneyland.
Alastair Dallas: worked for Wheeler & Gray, was assigned to the Disneyland
project, and Mr. Wheeler told me they agreed to let him be stolen by WED. Wise designed a
cleverly modular basic building for Disneyland because he knew that the art directors
would be making changes until opening day. The four main buildings of Main Street use the
same structure as the two L-shaped dark ride buildings behind the castle, which is the
same as the square portions of the symmetrical Tomorrowland exhibit buildings. It's a
basically flat roof supported by a regular grid of steel columns resting on 4' square
concrete pads. The drainage for the roof is provided by the use of tapered steel
beams-custom-fabricated "I" beams with slope on the top. The facades are
completely non-structural.

Robert Wiskey
Location: Above the Market House
Inscription: Robert Wiskey - Stone Mason
In a 1969 issue of the Disney News there is an article on some of the Windows on Main
Street. One of them is Robert Washo with the inscription Stone Mason. Apparently Robert
Washo and Robert Wiskey are the same person. Robert used to head the Staff Shop which
performed concrete and plastic work. Later he became Disneyland's Buildings Manager.
