During the recent Monstrous Summer media event, Rebekah and I had the opportunity to dine at Teppan Edo in Epcot's Japan Pavilion. I've eaten at several Teppanyaki restaurants over the years and the routine is usually the same, albeit lots of fun. Volcano, Japanese egg roll, scary fire ... I'm sure you've seen it, too. But on this night we got something I haven't seen before. Chef Nagatoshi took what seemed to be all of his "show" time to create something that was new to me, a Mickey made of onions (though his nose was the requisite volcano :)  The table next to us, the only other table I saw, did not get the Mickey so I wouldn't assume it happens all the time, but I 'm sure ours wasn't the only time. Watching the whole thing slowly come together was a lot of fun and well worth missing other, more traditional, Teppanyaki elements.

As for the food ... I'm a vegetarian and this restaurant is definitely not meant for me. The Assorted Tempura appetizer was great and they were happy to substitute all veggie for me (it usually comes with shrimp and chicken as well). They had one vegetarian entree which was all vegetables. Unfortunately, tofu wasn't a protein option as it is at other restaurants I've been to. Also, the standard side dish is a teriyaki rice with beef and the vegetarian substitute is standard white rice - fried rice wasn't available. So my dinner was pretty boring. The desserts, however, were wonderful. I really loved the Chocolate Ginger Cake (with a side of ice cream) I ordered, and also enjoyed the Green Tea Cheesecake even though I'm not a green tea fan. The non-alcoholic citrus juice concoction was also very good. The prices are high compared to other Teppanyaki restaurants, but not unexpectedly high for an Epcot restaurant.

So while the dinner itself wasn't great from my perspective, everything around it - the desserts and especially the show - more than made up for it. I'd be happy to accompany a meat-eating group back there any time.

Now ... enjoy a complete video of the Mickey magic.
