Tokyo DisneySea at Five

This past July 14 the ninth theme park in the Disney universe commenced its ten month long “Sea of Celebration? (the anniversary officially concludes next May). The theme itself is that we are embarking on a Dream Cruise with the Fab Six and Chip ‘n’ Dale for company and each has an area of responsibility. For example Mickey is the Cruise Director, Daisy is the Fashion Director, Goofy is the Discovery Director and those rascally chipmunks are responsible for the entertainment. However the theme isn’t very well conveyed in the park and only the Dockside Stage show Over the Waves (a bizarre show that uses Madonna’s Vogue and Express Yourself and Maniac from Flashdance as the musical score) uses the characters in this various guises. The other shows and parade have different character interpretations for the special event.

The Aquasphere that is the centrepiece of the entrance plaza to the park has been decorated with a series of golden sculptures of the Fab Six each clasping a vase tilted to such a degree that water is falling into the pool. The photo spot is also flanked by stained glass interpretations of the various Ports of Call at Tokyo DisneySea. The entranceway to Mediterranean Harbor has also been decorated for the season with colourful banners and trumpets.

Throughout the park each “land? has received its own fifth anniversary banners that are appropriately themed to each area. Also quirky icons (more instant photo spots for the park) have been careful deposited throughout the park. The purpose of these sculptures is a little perplexing as there is no real underlying theme except that of three-dimensional postcards from each Port of Call. The most disturbing is undoubtedly Genie dressed as Jasmine (complete with feminine features).

In future Tokyo DisneySea updates we will feature images from the two new stage shows Over the Waves at Dockside Stage and the limited engagement of Big Band Beat. In addition LP will feature an extensive photo-essay from the spectacular Legend of Mythica show.
