Disney Gets New Chief of Consumer Products Worldwide

Note: Today's Los Angeles Times has a related story that discusses in depth the perceived problems with this division that sparked the change.

Hoping to boost its lackluster Consumer Products division, Disney has replaced the president of Consumer Products Worldwide. Andrew P. Mooney, has been named President, Disney Consumer Products Worldwide. Mooney, a 20-year veteran of Nike Inc., most recently served as head of its global marketing function and apparel business. Mooney will lead Disney's Consumer Products business, which includes Licensing, The Disney Stores, Disney Interactive and Disney Publishing.

"Andy brings a wealth of experience in global marketing, brand management and product development," Michael Eisner, Disney CEO, said. "He has a strong record of combining creative marketing and innovative product design to produce outstanding results, and I'm very confident he will accelerate the performance improvements we expect at Disney Consumer Products. We are excited to have attracted someone with Andy's outstanding talent and experience."

Mooney replaces Anne E. Osberg, who served in the position since 1997. Osberg will be leaving the company and pursuing other opportunities. Barton K. (Bo) Boyd will remain as Chairman, Disney Consumer Products Worldwide, and will work with Mooney on a range of initiatives, including reduction of the company's merchandise licensee base, the acceleration of international growth and new marketing campaigns for Disney products.

"Anne has served the company very well for many years and contributed greatly to our growth during that time," said Eisner. "She is a talented executive and we wish her the best in her future endeavors."

Mooney, a Corporate Vice President for Nike, most recently served as Chief Marketing Officer and head of Global Apparel. In his role, he was responsible for directing worldwide marketing strategies for both the Nike and Jordan brands, as well as management of the company's $3 billion global apparel business. In addition, he led the recent effort to reorganize Nike's brand marketing activities, including development of new advertising strategies.

"I'm looking forward to working with Andy," Boyd said. "He understands consumer brands and the importance of developing signature products. Andy's fresh perspective will help drive the turnaround of Disney Consumer Products."

Mooney joined Nike in 1980 as financial controller for Nike U.K. He was named Director of Marketing for Nike U.K. in 1982. From 1984 to 1992 he was promoted to positions of increasing responsibility within Nike's U.S. marketing organizations, eventually becoming Chief Marketing Officer in 1992. Mooney collaborated with advertising agency Wieden & Kennedy on the highly acclaimed Nike campaigns, "Just Do It," "Bo Knows" and "Hare Jordan."

Mooney served from 1995 to 1998 as Vice President, Equipment. In that role, he led the company's entry into the global sports equipment market. He became a Corporate Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for the second time in 1998 and added the role of Vice President, Global Apparel this year.

Osberg joined Disney in 1988 as Director of Strategic Alliances and joined Disney's Consumer Products business the following year as Vice President of Film and Television Licensing. Her duties were expanded to include Disney's standard character properties in 1992, and she was promoted to Senior Vice President of Disney Licensing the following year. In 1994, Osberg was promoted to President of Disney Consumer Products in the U.S. and Canada. She was named President of Disney Consumer Products Worldwide in 1997.
