Fantasia/2000 Orchestrates Nearly $4 Million in Just Three Days at 75 IMAX Theaters Worldwide
Records Set at Most International Engagements
Audiences all over the world continued to flock to IMAX ® theaters in record numbers to experience Walt Disney Pictures' animated extravaganza, Fantasia/2000, as the film's three-day gross climbed to an impressive $3,874,000 at just 75 venues, it was announced today (1/4) by Richard Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group.
Domestically, the film added $742,434 on Monday to its opening two-day tally of $2,290,525 for a gross-to-date of $3,329,959. In international markets, the film played to near-capacity crowds at 21 IMAX theaters in 14 countries and grossed a sensational $842,000 -- $40,095 per screen average -- during the first three days of release. New IMAX records were set at 18 of those international venues.
Commenting on the announcement, Cook said: "Fantasia/2000 is a real crowd pleaser, and the word-of-mouth from moviegoers attending the IMAX theaters has been nothing short of phenomenal. This is truly a historic engagement and we are thrilled by the way it is playing to audiences of all ages."
Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler, Imax co-chief executive officers, added: "Reports from IMAX theaters all over the world indicate that Fantasia/2000 is a box office winner and a great milestone for Imax as the first full-length theatrical film ever presented in our medium.
"We are thrilled to be working with Disney and are very happy that they selected IMAX theaters as the launch window to bring this special film to moviegoers and help them experience this artistic triumph in a whole new way."
