Hyperion Names Ellen Archer Vice President and Publisher And Will Schwalbe Vice President and Editor in Chief
Ellen Archer, vice president and associate publisher of Hyperion, has been promoted to vice president and publisher, and Will Schwalbe, executive editor, has been named vice president and editor in chief. The announcement was made today by Robert S. Miller, president of Hyperion. The appointments take effect immediately.
As publisher of Hyperion, Archer assumes responsibility for the editorial, production, and art departments and will continue to supervise marketing, publicity, synergy, and sales functions for Hyperion and its four imprints. Before joining Hyperion in April 1999, Archer was vice president and associate publisher of the Ballantine Publishing Group.
In making the announcement today, Miller said: "Ellen Archer is one of the most consistently creative, energetic professionals in our business. Ellen knows how to make any book reach its ultimate potential, whether it is a literary novel or a celebrity memoir; her campaigns for several bestsellers, including Steve Martin's "Shopgirl", Dr. Judith Wallerstein's "The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce", and Liz Smith's "Natural Blonde", speak for themselves. I'm thrilled that she will be Hyperion's publisher. Will Schwalbe is passionately eclectic as an editor, and this ability combined with his experience and his devotion to authors will serve him extremely well as editor in chief. With these promotions, Hyperion is well positioned to continue its march up the bestseller lists for years to come."
As editor in chief, Schwalbe will oversee the editorial and managing editorial departments, as well as acquire and edit fiction and nonfiction titles for the house, reporting to Archer. As executive editor at Hyperion, Schwalbe acquired and edited a variety of national bestsellers including: "The Hungry Ocean: A Swordboat Captain's Journey" by Linda Greenlaw; "FISH! A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results" by Steve Lundin, Harry Paul, and John Christensen; "The Naked Chef" by Jamie Oliver; and edited Paul Hoffman's "The Man Who Loved Only Numbers" which won the Rhone-Poulenc Prize for best science book in 1998. He also has overseen the launch of Hyperion East, an imprint specializing in Asian fiction in translation. Before joining Hyperion in 1997, Schwalbe was editor in chief and senior vice president of William Morrow and Company.
