Disney's 'Atlantis: The Lost Empire' Appears Digitally On 13 Screens Nationwide on June 15th
Disney's 'Atlantis: The Lost Empire' Set to Make a Big Splash With 13 Digital Engagements Nationwide on June 15th
Walt Disney Pictures' exciting new animated action-adventure, "Atlantis: The Lost Empire," will use the latest technology to thrill moviegoers when it debuts in digital cinema in 13 specially-equipped venues across the country on June 15th, it was announced June 13th by Chuck Viane, President of Buena Vista Pictures Distribution. In New York and Los Angeles, "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" began its digital engagements on June 8th with exclusive runs at Hollywood's legendary El Capitan Theatre and Clearview Cinemas Ziegfeld Theatre; eleven additional theaters will begin digital exhibition of the film when it enters wide release on Friday, June 15th.
Commenting on the announcement, Viane said, "Audiences have responded in a big way to our digital engagements of 'Toy Story 2,' 'Dinosaur,' and 'The Emperor's New Groove,' and we're delighted to be presenting our latest animated achievement in a digital format. 'Atlantis: The Lost Empire' adds a bold visual style to Disney's tradition of high-quality storytelling, and moviegoers can now see it in the best possible presentation; digital cinema allows us to bring them just that."
The El Capitan Theatre showcases its digital movies using Texas Instruments' DLP Cinema® technology, which uses three Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) chips to control the image delivered to the screen. DMD is a special type of semiconductor -- a computer chip with an array of 1.3 million hinged, microscopic mirrors mounted in a package about 2" square. The mirrors move under computer control via a stream of digital data feed from a briefcase-size storage device near the projector. Each mirror is about one-fourth the cross-section of a human hair. The DLP Cinema projectors are the first in a new generation of digital projection technology replacing conventional film projectors. The d-cinema playback system also allows the audio reproduction to be the best ever heard in public theatres, using an uncompressed linear digital audio format.
"Atlantis: The Lost Empire" will be available in a digital presentation in Hollywood; New York City; Burbank, California; Irvine, California; San Francisco; San Diego; Plano, Texas; Olathe, Kansas; Chicago; Cleveland; Orlando, Florida; Vancouver, BC; and Toronto, Ontario.
