18th Annual National Lum & Abner Society Convention
18th Annual National Lum & Abner Society Convention
The 18th annual NLAS Convention will be held in Mena on June 14-15, and you just may be interested in the guest lineup. Take a look at this:
Dal McKennon
Besides his remarkably flexible voice, Dal's face is the one you are most likely to remember seeing. That is because, while our guests have all had lengthy careers in radio and cartoons, Dal also made a number of on-screen appearances in various movies and TV shows, most notably as tavern keeper "Cincinnatus" on the 1960s DANIEL BOONE series starring Fess Parker. When he was not before the cameras, Dal could usually be found at a microphone, where he appeared on such classic radio series as DRAGNET and SUSPENSE, and could be heard in such Disney masterpieces as LADY & THE TRAMP, SLEEPING BEAUTY, MARY POPPINS, and BEDKNOBS & BROOMSTICKS. He also found steady work with other cartoon studios, for whom he voiced characters as wildly diverse as Q. T. Hush, Archie Andrews and Gumby. And of course, he spent over 15 years with the Walter Lantz studio, playing more different characters than anyone could possibly count. At age 83, he continues to play the role of Gumby, and shows no sign of ever slowing down.
Ginny Tyler
Like Dal above, Ginny spent a good portion of her career with the Disney Studios, although far from on an exclusive basis. She began her radio career in Seattle, arriving in Hollywood at just about the time that great medium was dying out. There were plenty of opportunities for her to use her vocal talents, however, beginning with some of the crazy records made by mad man Spike Jones. She got to work in more sedate records for Disney, where she narrated stories and played character parts for many years, often in company with Dal and two of our 2001 guests, Sam Edwards and Robie Lester. Ginny made a specialty of playing animals, both the cartoon and realistic variety; she could be heard in Disney's THE SWORD IN THE STONE, and had an uncredited but co-starring role as Polynesia the parrot in DOCTOR DOLITTLE (1967), with Rex Harrison. Her non-animal roles include a stint as Casper the Friendly Ghost in 1963, and teenaged sidekick Jan on Hanna-Barbera's SPACE GHOST, as well as the intensely cute Flirtacia on THE ADVENTURES OF GULLIVER.
Nancy Wible
Yet another radio veteran, Nancy arrived in Hollywood as a singer, but soon discovered another talent. She demonstrated an amazing ability for ventriloquism, and with her "talking doll," Candy Sugarpine, she was soon making appearances on Los Angeles television. Later, like our two other guests above, Nancy found the field of animated cartoons to be quite lucrative, and she racked up work with Warner Bros., Walter Lantz (singing the CHILLY WILLY theme song), THE FUNNY COMPANY, DAVEY & GOLIATH, and many others. She currently makes her living with her first love, music, appearing as a singer with a Dixieland band in the Los Angeles area... and of course, Candy still joins her for a healthy number of appearances each year!
The NLAS convention festivities will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 14, when the three guests will take center stage... and believe us, all three of them know plenty about what to do in the spotlight! As has become our tradition, the overworked and underpaid NLAS writers are busy hammering out a script that will take full advantage of the guests' multiple talents.
As a switch from past years, this year's epic will take the form of a continuing saga that will begin at the 10 a.m. Saturday program and will run through the 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. programs as well.
Everyone should remember that the doors to the meeting room will remain locked until 30 minutes before each program. As usual, there is no registration fee or any other charge to attend the NLAS convention, which is held at the Lime Tree Inn motel in Mena.
What about your room reservations? Just call (501) 394-6350! Should the Lime Tree fill up (with people, not limes), they will direct you to the nearest other motels, the Sun Country Inn (across the street) and the Harvey House (next door).
If you need further information, e-mail the NLAS at CampHoll@aol.com, or call (205) 674-0101. We hope to see you there!
