Disney Channel Plans 24-Hour TV Network in Japan

Disney Channel will launch a 24-hour television network on cable and satellite platforms in Japan this winter, it was announced today by David Hulbert, president, Walt Disney Television International.

Disney Channel Japan will launch in winter 2003/4 and will be available as an a la carte option on SKY PerfecTV and as a basic package channel on cable. The Channel will offer the best of Disney entertainment 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Viewers in Japan will be able to watch a wide range of top quality programming from the world's leading children's and family entertainment channel, including classic animation movies, new award-winning original Disney television series such as 'Recess' and 'Kim Possible' and the high quality, creative pre-school programming of 'Playhouse Disney.'

The launch of this service means that Disney Channel will now be available in over 100 million homes in 63 countries around the world.

"The timing of this announcement could not be more momentous with two major anniversaries, both of which have played a major part in our plans to launch Disney Channel in Japan," said Hulbert. "It is 20 years since the first Disney Channel came to life in the United States in 1983 and its also 20 years since Tokyo Disneyland was opened - our first Disney theme park outside of the United States.

"Today's announcement is just as significant as those made 20 years ago and will have a major impact not only on the way that the Disney brand is enjoyed in Japan but also in the development of the pay television business," continued Hulbert. "I am confident that Disney Channel Japan will go on to become one of the most successful international Disney Channels."
