Young Students to Attend Animation Workshop Hosted By Disney's Michael Eisner During 'ABC Primetime Preview Weekend'

Children From Anaheim and Los Angeles Participate In September 6 Event Celebrating The Wonderful World of Disney and ABC With Disney Animators, Michael Eisner at Disney's California Adventure(TM) Park

One hundred children from Southern California art programs -- two programs from Anaheim and one from Los Angeles -- will take part in an exclusive animation workshop hosted by Michael Eisner, chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company, at 11:30 a.m., September 6, in Disney's California Adventure.

This one-of-a-kind event is being held as part of the park's second annual "ABC Primetime Preview Weekend," September 6-7. The participating children, ages 7 to 11, are from the Los Angeles Inner-City Arts Program; Summer Art Reach of Anaheim; and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Anaheim.

Six creators of modern animation motion pictures will join Eisner for the event, during which the children will be treated to lunch, a hands-on animation demonstration, view images from Disney animated features and create their own animated drawings.

Among the animation filmmaking legends appearing are Don Hahn, producer, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Atlantis; and Glen Keane, supervising animator of such characters as Ariel (The Little Mermaid), Beast (Beauty and the Beast), Aladdin (Aladdin), Pocahontas (Pocahontas), Tarzan (Tarzan) and John Silver (Treasure Planet). Also featured will be Andreas Deja, supervising animator of such characters as Jafar (Aladdin), Scar (Lion King) and Lilo (Lilo & Stitch).

The roster of top animation filmmakers also includes Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, co-directors of Lilo & Stitch; and Eamonn Butler, supervising animator on Dinosaur, who will demonstrate state-of-the-art digital animation techniques.

The Inner-City Arts After-School Program, located in downtown Los Angeles, was created in 1989 and provides children from 14 Los Angeles elementary schools activities in the visual arts, dance, digital animation, music and choir. Some 800 children a year participate in the program, the only non- tuition-based arts education available to inner-city kids.

"Inner-City Arts is delighted to be able to have our students join Michael Eisner and the Disney animators in a day filled with the sights and sounds of the World of Disney," said Cynthia S. Harnisch, executive director, Inner-City Arts. "To engage in creativity and artistic exploration will give our students an expanded view of the world around them, through discovery and fun."

The Summer Art Reach Program of Anaheim, sponsored and funded by the Anaheim Arts Association, targets children ages 7 to 13 that have an interest in developing skills in water colors, pencil and pastels. Some 100 children participate in the five-week program, which began in 1985.

"We are extremely excited to have the children of our program participate in the animators workshop," said Alice Dennis, president, Anaheim Arts Association and treasurer for the Anaheim Arts Council. "Our students will benefit from learning from the best Disney animators about characters, animation and the wonderful world of art."

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Anaheim serve some 400 youths daily in four locations throughout the city. Established in 1989, the clubs provide a "safe place to learn and grow with life-enhancing programs and character development experiences."

"Each day, children come to our club sites, many of whom do not have art programs in school due to budget cuts," said Michael Baker, executive director, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Anaheim. "Every child has the potential for greatness. The opportunity for these kids to participate in the Disney animation event can help them realize that."

"ABC Primetime Preview Weekend" at Disney's California Adventure, featuring more than 65 stars from the network's new and returning shows for the fall season, gives fans the opportunity to meet and greet their stars during a variety of entertaining and unusual in-park activities. Among those appearing during the two-day event are Jennifer Garner ("Alias"), John Ritter ("8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter"), Dennis Franz ("NYPD Blue"), Bonnie Hunt ("Life with Bonnie"), George Lopez ("George Lopez") and Jim Belushi ("According to Jim").
