Editor's Note: David Kent Mumford passed away on January 20, 2003 at the age of 46 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Burbank after a valiant fight with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and paraneoplastic pemphigus. David was a well-known to Disney fans because of his books - especially Disneyland: The Nickel Tour - and his numerous appearances at Disneyana conventions.
From the DavidMumford.com message boards:
A new foundation was set up January 20, 2004 to honor and memorialize the magic and goodness that is David. It is called the David Kent Mumford PARC Foundation Fund. PARC is an acronym for Pediatric After-hours Referral Clinic. This is a clinic at Providence St. Joseph's Medical Center, where David was treated, which cares for children between the hours of 4PM and 6AM both as an emergency care clinic and patient referral facility during the hours when most physicians are not available.
It was brought to my attention that there is a great need for toys to give to the children in an effort to calm them down and comfort them while at the clinic. Any toys such as beanie babies, plush toys of any kind, dolls, games or really any toy small or large would be appreciated. Monetary donations are also welcomed and much needed.
I spent a great deal of time with David while he was ill and I was always amazed by his constant compassion and concern for others who were suffering. Even when he was having a very hard time he was always expressing concern for fellow patients and asking me to pray for them and send them healing. He was truly remarkable that way. In remembrance of that deep sensitivity and caring I feel gratified that this foundation was set up today in his honor. I know how much all of us who love Disney and the wonder and magic it touches in us all can relate to toys and the joy and pleasure they bring. I know that David did. His room was filled with toys of all kinds which distracted him, made him smile and reminded him to dream beyond his then current circumstances.
I feel David would appreciate this gesture of remembrance in his name. Words can never express what a void there is in so many lives due to his passing. I can only hope to carry on his memory with acts of charity and kindness to others.
Please send or bring all toys no matter how small or large or any gift in kind to:
