New Animated Comedy Series 'Disney's Dave the Barbarian' Premieres Friday, January 23 on Disney Channel

Move over, Conan. Hit the road, Attila. The world gets a comedic perspective on the scourge of the Middle Ages in "Disney's Dave the Barbarian," an all-new animated series premiering Friday, January 23 at 5:30 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel.

Produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, the series follows the title character's hilarious escapades with his offbeat family -- including his primping older sister Candy and his fierce-yet-tiny younger sister Fang -- as they protect themselves and their kingdom from a world of uproariously odd foes. Complicating matters is brawny Dave's non-barbarian demeanor -- he prefers the finer things in life, like origami and gourmet cooking. But with a combination of Dave's brute strength, his sisters, his diminutive pet dragon Faffy, his magical nagging sword Lula, and the kids' guardian, a curmudgeonly sorcerer named Uncle Oswidge, villains don't stand a chance.

"Disney's Dave the Barbarian" premieres Friday with a five-episode mini-marathon beginning at 5:30 p.m. The series airs regularly on weekends with episodic premieres on Fridays.

"Dave the Barbarian" springs from the off-kilter imagination of Creator/Executive Producer Doug Langdale ("Disney's The Weekenders") and is directed by Howy Parkins ("Disney's Lloyd in Space"). For Langdale, the series grew from a single word.

"The genesis of the series was that I tried to think of the worst possible name you would have to scream out for help if you needed a barbarian hero to come to your rescue," Langdale explains. "It was simple: 'Dave.' The show pretty much fell into place from there."

While the series features a decidedly wacky brand of humor, just underneath it lies a relatable story of kids growing up, and of siblings who have interests beyond the typical barbarian or girl. Its underlying messages about the importance of self-expression and sibling support fit neatly with Disney Channel's focus on optimism, great storytelling, self-expression and family values.

Danny Cooksey ("Diff'rent Strokes") heads an ensemble cast as the title character. Joining Cooksey is Estelle Harris ("Seinfeld"), Tress MacNeille ("Disney's House of Mouse," "The Simpsons"), Erica Luttrell ("The New Ghostwriter Mysteries"), Kevin Michael Richardson ("Like Family"), Frank Welker ("What's New Scooby-Doo") and Jeff Bennett ("Johnny Bravo"). Guest voices include Joan and Melissa Rivers, and Metallica's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.
