(October 29, 2007) Hong Kong Disneyland (HKDL) and the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) celebrated the 5th Anniversary of Disneys Environmentality Challenge (DEC) by hosting a Environmentality Pledge Signing Ceremony at Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel this afternoon. The Ceremony was officiated by Dave Vermeulen, Vice President of Resort Operations of Hong Kong Disneyland, Vincent Tang, Assistant Director (Nature Conservation and Infrastructure Planning) of Environmental Protection Department and young local artist Alex Fong.
Every little bit makes a big difference thats at the heart of our Disney Environmentality Challenge, explained Dave Vermeulen. By helping our young people understand the importance of acting in an environmentally responsible way and encouraging them to think of new ways to be green in their own lives, we hope we can foster a new generation of conservationists.
Designed to encourage primary and secondary school students to imagine creative new ways of bringing green concepts to life, the DEC is built around four important environmental themes -- Waste Reduction Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Replace, Clean Air, Save Energy and Save Water.
Participating students are encouraged to take the Environmentality Pledge to protect the environment and to participate in a class project competition which is a challenging and fun experience. Through the DEC, HKDL and EPD hope to create awareness of environmental protection as well as promoting team work among our younger generation.
The Disney Environmentality Challenge encourages young students to put their green ideas into action which is fundamental to the building and development of a green community, explained Vincent Tang. Over the past few years, we have seen very high quality class projects, which are concrete evidence of superb team work among the participating students.
At the Environmentality Pledge Signing Ceremony, Alex Fong was on hand to encourage the students in their environmentality pledge and to brainstorm with them on creative ways to be green in their lives at school and at home.
He talked briefly about his own contribution to environmentality and chatted about the importance of recycling. To support the DEC, he wore a scarf made using recycled clothing.
As of today, more than 220,000 students have taken the pledge to protect the environment in the DEC, which looks to encourage many thousands more in the years to come.
