Disneys Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey Returns to Walt Disney World Resort in February 2009
(June 17, 2008) Disney's Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey, an enrichment event with special appeal for African American high school students, will return to Walt Disney World Resort Feb. 12-16, 2009.
One hundred teens from across the country who demonstrate the potential for greatness will pack their bags -- and their dreams -- and head to Walt Disney World Resort, where they will learn about creative and non-conventional career opportunities.
"We received more than 3000 nominations for the first Disney Dreamers Academy in 2008," said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "Due to the incredible response, we're going to continue the academy with a whole new class of 100 dreamers in 2009."
Disney's Dreamers Academy sessions will include interactive workshops with Disney cast members and executives focusing on everything from culinary arts to animation, set design to business, architecture to show production, and business to engineering. The teens will hear inspirational stories from entertainment celebrities and professional athletes, and they will even have time to enjoy some fun in the Disney theme parks -- where they can see the first-hand results of "Disney dreamers."
Steve Harvey said Disney's Dreamers Academy "is very important to me because it gets to the heart of what my foundation is all about. It's about the education of our young people who are oftentimes slighted and don't have the chance to be exposed to a variety of job skills and job sets and meet with people in the fields they're interested in. We want to give our young achievers the tools to become overachievers -- to take their dreams stratospheric."
High school students from around the country can be nominated to participate in Disney's Dreamers Academy. Young dreamers can be nominated by anyone, including parents, guardians, teachers, church members, social organizations -- even themselves. Nomination forms can be found at www.steveharvey.com and will be accepted from Sept. 1-30, 2008. The Disney Dreamers Academy class of 2009 will be announced in December 2008.
A select panel of judges including Steve Harvey, key African American community leaders and Disney representatives will choose the 100 finalists -- students who show promise but may need a little motivation and who share one common trait: the power to dream.
