Report: The next generation Disney Store opens in South Coast Plaza

On October 4th the new Disney Store - and the first of the new generation Disney Stores - was unveiled at the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California. Mickey and Minnie were onhand for the grand opening celebration. Throughout the day there were many activities to celebrate the occasion including concerts by the Bear in the Blue House, Nobody's Angels and a fashion show featuring new Disney store outfits. Tigger and Buzz Lightyear were available for pictures and Radio Disney was giving away prizes if you could answer simple Disney trivia. One small child won. when he was asked "Why is Dumbo special," he paused for a moment and then replied, "Because his mommy loves him."

The new store no longer has Disney characters around the ceiling and the cash registers are in the back of the store under a large Disney "D" replacing the large video wall.  Instead, at the entrance as you can see below, are several video monitors arranged in the Mickey silhouette. They have added a section of home items that included a toaster that will play it's a small world and toasts an image of Mickey onto your bread, and bath supplies such as a soap dispenser shaped like Mickey's shoe and a sponge shaped like his glove.

Also of note are a kiosk where guests can order merchandise from DisneyStore.com and another setup where guests can try out software from Disney Interactive.
