Report: NFFC 2003 Kick-Off Convention
I was privileged to be able to attend the NFFC's 2003 Kick-Off at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Garden Grove just south of The Disneyland Resort. The day of Disney seminars is always fun to attend because I always learn something about where the company has been and where the company is headed. To start the day we had a breakfast buffet.
As we digested our meal Greg Gunther from Walt Disney Parks and Resorts presented a seminar on Disney's Aladdin -A Musical Spectacular which just had its Grand Premiere at Disney's California Adventure. Greg got involved with theatrical productions that take place at the park when he was working at Feature Animation and his friend Anne Hamburger, who has brought in to entertainment, asked him if he wanted to get back to his theatrical roots by changing the face of theme park entertainment.
He discussed the creative team of Aladdin including director Francesca Zambello and choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett. Greg then walked us through the production giving us insight in to the creative process. Did you know that Jafar's cape weighs forty pounds? During the Question and Answer session, Greg gave us some insight into entertainment's future including an upcoming Epcot parade, and productions based upon Snow White and Cinderella.
Next was Tony Garrison from The Disneyland Resort spoke about merchandise specialized businesses. His department is going to be supporting the release of The Pirates of the Caribbean film. There will be core merchandise available at several merchandise location. Merchandise focused for the Disney fan will be available at a special merchandise event that will take place in the summer. Details about the event, which will have a smaller capacity than other events, will be available soon. He also mentioned that there will be another Haunted Mansion Holiday event on October 2nd with an exclusive dinner on October 1st.
Finally he discussed a gallery exhibit for Mickey's 75th Anniversary that will run for only 75 days and will culminate in a live auction. 75 Mickey's have been created and each one will feature a unique Disneyland outfit that will be auctioned off at the conclusion of the event. Tony then took question about merchandise and the Resort at large. Topics discussed included the 50th Anniversary, a Haunted Mansion Holiday CD, and upcoming promotions.
