Disneyland Resort Selects 2004 Ambassador to the World
Wednesday, October 8, 2003  10:00am
Disney's California Adventure, Stage 17 (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Theater)

Stage 17 of Disney's California Adventure usually hosts park guests to watch and play the popular "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" game show. But on Wednesday, October 8 at 10am a very different crowd was there. The Disneyland Resort cast had gathered in high anticipation to see who would be selected as the 2004 Disneyland Resort Ambassador to the World.

About 20 past Ambassadors were there, along with Walt Disney Company Vice-chairman Roy Disney and his wife Patty. Program participants included 2003 Ambassador Daina Baker, Disneyland Senior Vice-president T Irby, and Disneyland Resort President Cynthia Harriss.

Finalists for the honor were cast members Marty Klein, Becky Murphy, and Becky Phelps. The ceremony, which lasted about an hour, culminated in the appearance of Mickey Mouse himself to announce that Becky Murphy would be the Ambassador for 2004.

Afterward, Ambassador Becky was paraded through Disney's California Adventure in an open convertible. Guests and spectators gathered outside the theater to greet her before and after her trip through the park.

The Ambassador program began in 1965, when Walt Disney selected Julie Reihm as "Miss Disneyland Tencennial." Every year since then a new Ambassador has been chosen. The program was extended to Walt Disney World in 1971, Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, and Disneyland Paris in 1992.

In 1995 a team of Ambassadors was selected. In 1999 Ambassadors Jennifer Simis and Darrell Mitter served for 18 months. The latter part of 2000 and all of 2001 were then served by Daina Roman-Osborn and Heri "Eddie" Garcia. In 2002 Matt Ebeling became the fist male Ambassador to serve solo.
