Happy Birthday Mickey and Minnie
On November 18, 1928 at New York's Colony Theatre, the world was introduced to Mickey and Minnie Mouse in Disney's Steamboat Willie, the first synchronized sound cartoon. The New York Times called it "an ingenious piece of work with a good deal of fun. It growls, whines, squeaks and makes various other sounds that add to its mirthful quality."
In the 1930s Mickey Mouse Clubs sprung up at movie theaters around the nation. On Saturday afternoons these clubs would enjoy a Mickey Mouse cartoon, followed by the introduction of the officers who lead in the recitation of the 'Mickey Mouse Creed' and the singing of 'America'. These would be followed by a performance or a contest on the stage. Finally, the group chanted the 'Mickey Mouse Club Yell' "Handy Dandy Sweet as candy! Happy kids are we! Eenie! Ickie! Minnie! Mickey! M-O-U-S-E!" , the 'Mickey Mouse Club Song, and settled down to watch the films selected for the day.
In the 1950s fans finally had the opportunity to meet them in person in the Disney theme parks. A picture and autograph with Mickey and Mnnie is a highlight of any family's Disney trip. Their likenesses have graced countless t-shirts, collectibles, napkins, shopping bags, carpets and everything else you can imagine. And if that's not enough, the "Hidden Mickey" has also become a part of Disney culture.
Their popularity continues to grow to this day as they have continued their film and television career through hundreds of animated shorts including the recent series House of Mouse. They also continue to perform in various shows and parades around the in all of Disney's theme parks around the globe.
Today Mickey and Minnie turn 75 years old. LaughingPlace.com celebrates this day with 75 pictures from our collection presented in no particular order.
