Rebekah ventures out to The World two days after Charley.

On Friday, August 13th Hurricane Charley traveled through Central Florida, bringing with it high winds that toppled trees and knocked out power to areas surrounding Walt Disney World.

In preparation for Charley, Fort Wilderness guests were relocated from the heavily wooded, mostly RV & tent campground resort into various other Disney resorts and the parks closed at 1p allowing cast members the opportunity to get home prior to the storm’s anticipated evening arrival. Most of the day’s activity for my sister who works in Downtown Disney centered on prepping the store in case of water seeping in under the doors. Merchandise was picked up off the floor. Items were covered in shrink-wrap to protect them from the possible moisture.

The area hit the hardest in Central Florida is east of Walt Disney World and the other theme parks. Area theme parks opened on Saturday and appeared to be nearly at normal operations by Sunday.

Doobie and I decided to venture over to Walt Disney World on Sunday afternoon. As we drove through Celebration we were struck by the number of trees that were down along our usually tree-lined streets (see my other story). However once on Disney property we were struck by the lack of debris by comparison. We saw downed trees but very, very few downed signs. It was a sharp contrast to the images of devastation on our television.

If you have a trip planned to the Central Florida theme parks, please don’t let the media’s images of aftermath of Hurricane Charley keep you away. Central Florida’s theme parks are well prepared to give you a terrific vacation experience.
