Toon Talk Trivia: 

  • The Great Mouse Detective was re-released in theaters in 1992 under the title The Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective.
  • Basil of Baker Street is due to return for his greatest case, locate the hidden Mickey, in the upcoming The Search for Mickey Mouse, due in 2004.
  • Wayne Allwine and Tony Anselmo, the current voices of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, can be heard as Thug Guards in this film.
  • Vel Bettin voiced the Sultan in the Aladdin television series and its two video sequels.
  • Candy Candido was the memorable voice of the Indian Chief in Peter Pan, as well as the Goons in Sleeping Beauty and the Crocodile in Robin Hood. His last film role was in Disney’s Herbie Rides Again.
  • Writers/directors Ron Clements and John Musker previously worked together as animators on The Fox and the Hound and writers on The Black Cauldron. After The Great Mouse Detective, they went on to direct The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules and Treasure Planet, due November 27th.
  • Barrie Ingham not only voiced Basil of Baker Street, but also the drunken Bartholomew in “The World’s Greatest Criminal Mind” sequence.
  • Ratigan’s supervising animator Glen Keane went on to animate such other characters as Sykes in Oliver and Company, Ariel, the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Tarzan and Silver in the upcoming Treasure Planet.
  • Melissa Manchester also co-wrote the songs for Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure and lent her voice to the Hercules television series.
  • Oscar-winning composer Henry Mancini also scored Disney’s Condorman. His Anglophilic score for The Great Mouse Detective was his first for an animated feature.
  • Basil Rathbone, the movies’ most famous Sherlock Holmes and the likely inspiration for the name of our hero, provided the voice for his alter ego one more time … nineteen years after his death. (A pre-existing recording was used.)
  • Alan Young is the current voice of Uncle Scrooge McDuck and also appeared in The Cat from Outer Space.
  • Hidden Dumbo Alert: Keep an eye out for him in the toy shop scene.
