So Abraham Lincoln was not just a great man because he saved the Union. He was also a great man because he saved it for the right reasons. He in fact died because he "wanted to set men free". John Wilkes Booth killed Lincoln because of the President's last public words. Two days after Lee surrendered Lincoln gave a speech to a crowd outside the White House. The speech was a response to questions about the state of Louisiana giving black men the right to vote. Lincoln stated that he approved of the Louisiana measure and believed the "franchise should be given to all negros who had served the nation's cause". Booth was reported to have said "that's the last speech he'll ever give". Three days later Booth made sure his words came true.

The curtain comes down on Lincoln

Hopefully what I have written above has helped you to think about why the Gettysburg Address still has meaning today and why it is so important that a presentation about Lincoln showcases this speech. I also hope I have helped you to see that the current presentation of Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln has made what was a nice way to see what Lincoln looked like into a powerful statement on the impact of his life. If we look beyond the flaws present in any attempt to capture the essence of a great man's life; I think Great Moments can help us to understand better who Lincoln was and how he was used to save and to redeem our country. If Abraham Lincoln had never lived I'm not sure what The United States would be, but I am sure it would be less.

So be sure to honor our greatest President on your next visit.
