#9 - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Headlined by one of the most off-the-wall, over-the-top performances in cinematic history (that would be Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, by the by), this unlikely blockbuster was a gleeful throwback to the great action yarns of old. Although a bit long in the tooth, this Pirate movie retained the swashbuckling spirit of the classic Disneyland attraction, while building on and adding to its mythology with the awe-inspiring ‘skeletons in the moonlight' plot device. Yo ho, yo ho! A pirate's life for me!

Revelatory in its tender quietness, this documentary on legendary Disney animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson details not just the career-long artistic collaborations of two of the most popular of Walt's famed "Nine Old Men", but also their lifelong friendship, a friendship that "changed the face of animation". This Special Edition DVD adds to the experience with more interview footage, clips of their debut scenes, and peeks into the duo's dual obsessions: trains and jazz.
