Ollie Johnston

During the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society event, Ollie Johnston shared a few words with me about the future of animation.

Ollie Johnston is a pioneer of conventional animation and when asked about the future of animation he holds inspiration for the future.

He stated that computer animation will never fully replace the love he has for hand drawings, but it is very good stuff in it’s own right. It is still a relatively new medium and has a lot of growth in store for the future. All aspects of animation will be touched and improve due to these advancements in technology. Computers are especially helpful in the timing of sequences. However, pencil drawings will always have a special place in his heart.

The future will be even brighter for up and coming art students. Ollie announced that thorough a joint venture along with his life long friends and fellow animators: Frank Thomas and Ward Kimball, they are developing a Website.

This website will be mainly of interest to art students as a tool for them to use in their studies. Although the exact details are sketchy at this point, the Website will provide a glimpse into all facets of Animation. This will include their own stories, anecdotes, histories and filmographies. This site will be interactive and is hoped to provide inspiration for students to build from.

As a side note in the movie The Iron Giant, released by Warner Brothers, there is a caricature of Ollie in the movie. Happy hunting.
