While some items were great deals - the watch and the sculpture as well as the pins - a few were a bit out of range - an original Robison? It was clear - after the first round of the RSP in which all but two LE pieces sold out, one high end and one low end - that the edition sizes were less than would have met the demand - but well within the "collectable" range. The use of the RSP - aside from making the availability of the event merchandise as fair as was possible - and the limits on items available per order - put a crimp in the secondary market. In past events buyers would choose multiples and sell them to finance their event participation. A managed scarcity will serve to drive up the prices on items with editions of less than 500 and create a demand for more merchandise.
But, with the huge cross-over appeal of the Haunted Mansion and Nightmare Before Christmas - especially in its inaugural year - should have had the Merchandise division scrambling for every available logo-worthy surface to market to a growing fan-base. A dated elongated coin die or an event logo button - also dated - should have been produced for the event - the price-point to cost ratio is a huge profit and a merchandise miss that stands out in a pumpkin patch of winning collectables.
The core merchandise, likewise, is a broad range of items and purchase points. The pins, apparel and plush are staples, but a soundtrack CD would have sold out in minutes. There are more items to come Im sure and I cant wait.
The lines to get the new Nightmare core merchandise were nearly as long as those for the
limited edition items.
