First and foremost, the characters are obviously not punching bags. It hurts a lot to have someone hit or kick a character. Other no-no’s in that aspect are not to try to wrap your arm around their neck area… it’s kind of like taking a huge weight and wrapping it around your neck but with sharp pains shooting through.

Second, all characters need to take a break every so often, so when you see them starting to make their way to one of the backstage areas, let them go. They will return shortly. No need to run them down because there is a pretty darn good chance that they will be back refreshed and ready to go.

Third, even though there are some characters that are strictly "atmosphere," don’t do the touristy thing by thrusting yourself or your kids towards the characters. There is too much rudeness already without having an additional person clawing their way towards a character. Patience is a virtue and it is appreciated by the characters… and they will notice you. Trust me on the one, I’ve been doing this on my own for quite a few years now and I have yet to walk away without a photo or autograph.

Last, but not least, have everything ready. Make sure the lens is off the camera and there is plenty of exposures left on the roll. Remove the caps from pens, or click to make sure they are ready to use. And of course when obtaining character autographs be sure to have the book open to the page that you want them to sign on.

Now that we’ve gone over a few of the basics let us take a stroll around Disneyland to figure out what we’re going to do. The mixing of both character hunting and riding attractions can be a bit hectic so try to lay out what you want more, the rides or the characters? And of course be sure to visit the Information Board on Main Street to find out what characters are supposed to in the park that day (they can even tell you who is appearing over at Goofy’s Kitchen). With map in hand and character hunting information procured from the Info Board, it is time to get cracking…
