Flying Carpets Over Agrabah
This attraction is in a far more appropriate setting than Adventureland in Walt Disney
World’s Magic Kingdom. With this incarnation, guests pilot magic carpets on the set
of a new Arabian movie. However, the director shouting directions is none other than the
Genie from Aladdin, perched high above the ground on a crane. The Genie is hollowing
commands and words of encouragement with a megaphone to the participants. This attraction
was the last to be chosen by Imagineering for the park, and the attention to detail is so
acute that I felt like I was back at Tokyo DisneySea in the Arabian Coast section. This
attraction could easily fit into the Coast as a neighbour of the Caravan Carrousel. The
backdrop behind the attraction shields guests from the pastel pink spires of the
Disneyland Hotel and also give guests the sensation of flying over Agrabah. The queue area
is hidden behind the backdrop walls, emerging at the back of the attraction under a canopy
of billowing fabric.
At WDSP, Imagineers have tried to put the attraction into a thematic context, rather than simply dumping the ride into Adventureland. Although the spitting camels are absent, the sight of Genie directing the action is considerable consolation. The attraction has been “Fastpassed” from the outset to allay the criticism that the Dumbo the Flying Elephant attraction suffers from due to the horrendous queues that ensue in the summer season.
The carpets that are a now familiar sight to Magic Kingdom guests have arrived in Paris.
