The ruins themselves are simply breath taking. Even as a European, a little blase about ancient civilisations having spent many summers visiting centuries-old chateaux and impressive castles, the sight is indescribable. The spectacle is even more stunning when the guide begins the in-depth discussion of the placement of the buildings and the purpose. I think we have become increasingly ignorant of architectural function and certainly take it for granted, but the level of detail and sophistication in the placement of every brick is impressive. There is a purpose to the location of every building in relation to the temple. The entire village was constructed with their religious beliefs in mind. Our guide was as knowledgeable as a Smithsonian host and he knew the answer to every single question posed to him. Although we spent just two hours on site, than experience was awesome and a valuable insight into this highly educated and evolved civilisation.

The return journey was made more comfortable, as the guide dispensed ice-cold Sol beer to the grown-ups and soft drinks for the under 21s. The beer supply quickly ran dry as we all tried to re-hydrate. On arrival back at the Playa de Costa, the high speed ferry was waiting to transport us back to Cozumel Island. Several Celebrity guests had upgraded to our ferry for the return trip. However, the seas were a little rough and there was more than one traveller running to the restroom for relief.

We decided to spend the last hour or so, perusing the stores alongside the quayside. The usual eclectic mix of souvenir stores and units retailing local wares could be found littered along the coastal road. The selection was impressive, varied and for once, the price was matched with the quality. It was a delight to check out the merchandise and the service was friendly without the "hard sell. A particular highlight was Viva Mexico!, a modern hypermarket selling a wide variety of Mexican handicrafts. This store represented excellent value for money and offered an unusual mix of wares, including the infamous $20 Mexican Survival Kit, complete with tequila, shot glasses, maracas, blanket, beach bag and....a Mexican hat!

On return to the ship, it was time to prepare for dinner. Tonight was another first for the Disney Magic as the restaurants celebrated MEXICALIfragilisticexpialidocious, a gastronomical Mexican adventure. We returned to the Animator's Palette for some surprising regional cuisine, which was immaculately created and presented. Then, we ascended to Deck 10 for a Latin American-flavoured deck party with copious Happy Hour margaritas and shots of tequila. Once again, the characters were enjoyed by the frenetic dancers from the Walt Disney Theatre, who gyrated to Ricky Martin and Gloria Estefan for several hours as the Magic silently set sail for the final Port of Call; Disney's Castaway Cay.

Join us next time for an extensive visit to an island that is simply perfect in everyway; Disney's Castaway Cay.
