Disney Cruise Line Caribbean Cruise - Part 6
Page 2 of 4

Much like any Disney property, the vistas offer a phenomenal range of sights to experience. The entire island is themed immaculately by the Disney imagineers and is exquisite in its attention to detail. Everywhere you look, there is something humorous and entertaining to see from the fantastic painted archaic buoys featuring Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Pluto (affectionately called Mount Rustmore) to the little model boat called The John Hench suspended from the ceiling of the picnic area, as a nod to the greatest imagineer of them all. Castaway Cay is simply awash with appropriate theming and eye candy for the inquisitive guest.

The family beach is also home to the gigantic 12-acre snorkelling lagoon with two "trails"; the Discover Trail for beginners and Explorer Trail for the more adventurous swimmers. I would heartily recommend the Getaway package that includes an inflatable ring and snorkel gear for the entire day plus an hour’s cycle rental. For just $32 each, it is excellent value (and only $16 for children). The snorkel lagoon is a must-see E ticket. Shark Reef at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon is my favourite unsung attraction at Walt Disney World. It is a hidden paradise with exquisite theming, like the upturned boat and a spectacular array of wildlife. The lagoon at Castaway Cay is vast (it took us nearly 30 minutes to snorkel out to the furthest reaches) and there are plenty of sunbeds and space for all guests. Alas, the "hidden Mickey" eluded us despite numerous attempts to locate him.

On the runway to Serenity Bay

Being without children, we took the shuttle tram to the adults-only section of the island, Serenity Bay. The tram took us down Castaway Cay runway, a lengthy strip of tarmac with two propeller-driven planes at either end, both bearing an ensigna from Donald Duck, grasping a bolt of lightning. On arrival, a vast beach greeted us, hugging the crystalline Caribbean waters. We had to blink hard to realise that this place did actually exist. The beach itself was a narrow strip enveloping the bay, but there was plenty of room and the strip must have been a mile long. The beautiful crystal blue waters were too tempting to miss and it was barely seconds later that we were both floating away on our inflatable rings. There is also plenty of wildlife in this lagoon, although not quite to the same standard as that of the purpose-built snorkelling lagoon. However, we saw several schools of fish, conches and some crabs.
