For the theming, WDI opted for another twist on the Lewis Carroll novel. Alice in Wonderland is already one of the most beloved texts of WDI, having already created a superior dark ride in Disneyland, a stunning horticultural masterpiece in Alice’s Curious Labyrinth at Disneyland Paris and the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at every Magic Kingdom. This is despite the movie being a box office failure on its arrival in the summer of 1951. The vast cast of characters complete with a wonderful mythical backdrop has always provided ample fodder for WDI. In addition, the Japanese have a particular adoration for the myriad of crazy characters from this enduring classic.

Therefore, for Eddie Sotto, formerly Senior Vice President and Executive Designer of Tokyo Disneyland, it seemed that choosing to recreate the Queen of Hearts Dining Hall was the perfect choice. Eddie remarked, “Like wine, Alice in Wonderland has actually improved with age. It may not have the warmth and heart of other Disney animated films, but it has memorable characters, memorable music and - this is probably most important - memorable environments. We at WDI are expert at creating worlds our guests don’t normally experience and Wonderland is a perfect example.?
