In this ‘Toon Talk’ feature, I’ll briefly highlight a recommended film or DVD, outside of the Disney universe, of similar interest to the main subject.

Mythological Monster Mash
A blast from the past in more ways then one, Clash of the Titans (1981, MGM) offers a parade of fantastic imaginary critters to rival Narnia’s: the winged Pegasus, a monstrous sea creature, a devilish faun and, most impressively, a serpentine Medusa with cherry jam for blood. His last feature film, Titans is a fitting swan song for stop motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen.

Starring Harry Hamlin, Burgess Meredith, Maggie Smith and Laurence Olivier as Zeus. Directed by Desmond Davis. DVD available from Warner Home Video.

Coming Soon in Toon Talk:

  • Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Toy Story 2 gets a new two-disc Special Edition of its own December 26.
  • Toon in for the Toon Talk Top 10 of 2005.

And Coming Soon from Buena Vista Home Video:

  • Only four months after its first DVD release, Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez’ Sin City is back again, this time “Re-cut, Reedited and Uncensored?; Mark Wahlberg leads an all-star cast in another director’s cut re-release, The Yards; Heath Ledger stars in the crime thriller Two Hands; the ESPN original movie Four Minutes, based on the true story of Roger Bannister (Jamie MacLachlan), the first man to break the four-minute mile; Vanguard Animation’s Valiant comes home to perch; and four Roger Corman “classics? - Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, Death Race 2000, Dinoroc and Big Bad Momma - get the special edition treatment (December 13).

  • The Academy Award-winning Chicago finally gets a special edition with a “Razzle Dazzle Edition?; another Broadway fave, Once Upon a Mattress, fresh off its television debut, stars Carol Burnett and Tracey Ullman; Heath Ledger and Matt Damon co-star in Terry Gilliam’s latest, The Brothers Grimm; and Benjamin Bratt and James Franco lead the war drama The Great Raid, available separately in the theatrical release and an unrated director’s cut (December 20).
