Toon Talk: Leroy and Stitch

With animation superior to the series’ “pilot? (the 2003 DVD Stitch! The Movie) and a script that captures the original 2001 film’s spirit even more so then the “official? sequel (the 2005 DVD Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch), Leroy is a fitting finale for this “Stitch saga?. A lot of the little touches of humor that made the original such a joy are present; I was particularly tickled by “Captain Stitch’s? BRB crew, a menagerie of Starfleet cadets by way of the 100 Acre Wood. Even the so-called “villains? of the series (Gantu, Myrtle Edmonds, 625 - who finally gets his own rather fitting name) are redeemed - save for that rascally rodent Dr. Hamsterviel, whose climactic imprisonment is presented in a very fitting (and very funny) musical coda.

Rounding out the DVD is a set-top “Big Red Battleship Flight Simulator? game (complete with Hamsterviel kibitzing from the sidelines) and a never aired Lilo & Stitch TV episode that introduces Experiment 251, dubbed “Link? by Lilo for his power to “bind together incompatible individuals?. And you can bet which particular bespectacled little know-it-all Lilo ends up linked to …

Toon Talk Rating: B

In this ‘Toon Talk’ feature, I will briefly highlight a recommended film or DVD, outside of the Disney universe, of similar interest to the main subject.

Musically Mutilated Martians

An often underrated and overlooked comedic entry in the films of Tim Burton, Mars Attacks! (1996, Warner) is a hysterical (in more ways then one) send-up of all those oh-so-serious alien invasion flicks from The Day the Earth Stood Still to Independence Day. What other film can boast Jack Nicholson as the President of the United States and Tom Jones ... as himself? Plus, see the creepy-coolest movie Martians since the original War of the Worlds.

The all-star cast also includes Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, Rod Steiger, Jim Brown, Lukas Haas, Natalie Portman, Pam Grier and the late great Sylvia Sidney. DVD available from Warner Home Video. MPAA Rating: PG-13.

Coming Soon in Toon Talk:

  • Yo ho, yo ho … Captain Jack is back in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (July 7, Disney).
  • Beware of the Monster House, the newest motion-capture animated adventure (July 21, Columbia).
  • A rotten kid discovers the answer to the question “why don’t you pick on someone your own size? the hard way in The Ant Bully (July 28, Warner).
