Disney’s Animal Kingdom Welcomes Endangered White Rhino to Growing Herd - (DL) (1/26/2010)

Disney’s Animal Kingdom welcomed a healthy white rhino to the family last week with the addition of a female calf born Sunday, Jan. 17.  Kendi, an 11-year-old white rhino, gave birth to her third baby after a 16-month gestation period. The baby, which has not yet been named, is the eighth white rhino born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom; her mother, Kendi, was the first. 



Disney Cast Members Help “Hope for Haiti” Telethon - (DL) (1/26/2010)

Lending a helping hand through their expertise in guest service, approximately 400 Walt Disney World Cast Members volunteered to answer more than 15,000 calls for the “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon and route donations to disaster relief organizations participating in the historic event. The benefit, which featured more than 100 of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, aired worldwide on major networks and cable outlets on Jan. 22 and raised more than $61 million for earthquake disaster relief.

Rich Ross, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios (TWDS), announced today that Sean Bailey has been named President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production as the segment continues to restructure its operation. Johnson, Mortensen Blaze to Chilly Walt Disney World Half Marathon Victory - (DL) (1/11/2010)

Michigan runners Chad Johnson and Emily Mortensen weathered near freezing temperatures Saturday to take home the men’s and women’s Walt Disney World Half Marathon division titles.

 
Braving freezing rain and temperatures in the low-30s, Johnson won for the second time after streaking to the finish at the Walt Disney World Half Marathon presented by CIGNA in 2008. Johnson, 33, who trained for the Disney event by running at times in snowy conditions in Rochester Hills, Mich., battled fellow Hanson’s Brooks Distance Project Running Club member Sage Canaday for nearly 10 miles before pulling away and finishing at 1:07:02 - 18 seconds ahead of Canaday. Luis Rivera from Puerto Rico was third at 1:08:55.


Bastos Prevails in Dramatic Walt Disney World Marathon - (DL) (1/11/2010)

Adriano Bastos weathered the elements and a late-race challenge Sunday to snag his sixth consecutive Walt Disney World Marathon present by CIGNA and seventh overall. Likewise, Lisa Mizutani won the women’s title for the second straight year. Unlike last year when Bastos, 31, led the 26.2 mile race virtually from start to finish, the colorful Brazilian battled temperatures in the low-30s and was pushed much of the race by several competitors, creating the tightest finish among Bastos’ seven victories at Disney. With about three miles to go, Bastos opened a small lead and crossed the finish line at 2:22:08 – 33 seconds ahead of fellow Brazlian Fredison Costa (2:22:41). Jay Lumpkins of Ocoee, Fla., was third (2:24:24).

Today Tales from the Laughing Place Magazine announced the contents for their fifteenth issue that is due for release in January ‘10. Issue 15 offers stories from two Disney resorts separated by over seven thousand miles but whose histories are intrinsically linked. The first international Magic Kingdom that was built on landfill in Tokyo Bay relied on the attraction roster and styling of the original Walt Disney World theme park. Tokyo Disneyland even took possession of an ambitious Audio-Animatronics show that was one of the founding attractions at Magic Kingdom when it opened on October 1, 1971. “Issue fifteen celebrates attractions past, present and future at both Walt Disney World and Tokyo Disney Resort,” Tales publisher Lee J MacDonald begins. “Tales was present on the final day of operations at The Mickey Mouse Revue and we take an affectionate look back at the history of the thirty-seven year old show including some rare artwork and maquettes from the development of the attraction.
