Last Chance to Enter D23 Expo’s Fan Art Contest Honoring One Hundred and One Dalmatians

Disney Cruise Line entertainers salute One Hundred and One Dalmatians' villain Cruella de Vil

D23 members are invited to submit fan art celebrating One Hundred and One Dalmatians for The Disney Fan Art Contest for the opportunity to have their work displayed at the D23 Expo 2011 taking place this year August 19-21 at the Convention Center in Anaheim, California. The contest puts the “spot”-light on One Hundred and One Dalmatians by inviting imaginative Disney lovers to create work inspired by the beloved animated film, currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. Winners, selected by a panel of Disney’s creative executives, will see their work prominently showcased in the D23 Expo’s Fan Art Gallery, themed to the infamous House of de Vil.

The deadline is April 4, 2011 so there’s still time for artists to submit sketches of their proposed work. As long as the final creation evokes One Hundred and One Dalmatians, the sky’s the limit for entries. There are some restrictions, however, so please read specifications carefully. For the entry form, click here; for more information, click here.

The D23 Expo—The Ultimate Disney Fan Event—brings the entire world of Disney under one roof, providing attendees with unprecedented access to Disney films, television and theme parks as never before.

Visit the official site for more information on the upcoming D23 Expo and how you can become a D23 member.

Disney Unveils Two Fashion Brands For Infants

Designed to appeal to trend-forward parents and discerning gift-givers, the Classic Disney and Walt Disney Signature collections of elegant apparel and infant gifts were unveiled today at the ENK International Children's Trade Show in New York City. Featuring enchanting scenes from Disney's rich heritage of stories, characters and art portrayed in an understated fashion, the collections will offer cashmere blankets, hooded robes and mittens, bibs and burp cloths, organic cotton tees, cardigans, and casual separates. The collections will be available at exclusive boutiques and high-end department stores such as Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom this fall.

"Our new Classic Disney and Walt Disney Signature infant brands speak to a consumer segment who indulges in premium essentials for their children and who splurge on the occasional luxury," said Simon Waters, vice president of Disney Consumer Products (DCP), Infant Franchise Management.

To help realize the collections, DCP enlisted leading infant fashion design label, Icky Baby, as key licensee. "With the expertise of Icky Baby and Disney's vision combined, we've achieved two new lines that are truly aspirational, elegant and classic featuring Disney characters in a tender yet subtle fashion," said Stephen Teglas, vice president, general manager, DCP Home & Infant, North America.

Icky Baby will showcase the Winter 06 and Spring 07 Classic Disney and Walt Disney Signature infant collections at the ENK International Children's Trade Show in New York City through August 8th at Pier 94, 12th Avenue and 55th Street.

Classic Disney, Magical Beginnings
Building on Walt Disney's philosophy that "Every child is born with a vivid imagination," the Classic Disney brand is born from decades of timeless heritage and rich storytelling, capturing the essence of beloved characters from classic Disney films including Bambi, Pinocchio, 101 Dalmatians, The Lion King and Lady and the Tramp. The Classic Disney brand offers sweet and adorable designs with a focus on fashion, detail and subtle character sketches perfect for upscale parents who grew up with Disney, love the characters and stories, and appreciate understated elegance in fashion for their children.

The first line of products to launch is the "Bambi Collection" featuring gift items including baby blankets, elegantly rolled and beautifully tied with rich satin ribbons; soft block sets in tulle bags; boxed burp cloths in tulle gift boxes; and full gift sets and bath sets, including hooded towels and mittens. Items will be available beginning in September at Nordstrom and in November at Bloomingdale's stores nationwide. Beginning in October, the Classic Disney Bambi Collection will expand to include infant apparel featuring soft tees made of organic cotton, 'take me home' sets, dresses and pajamas. Products will feature softly-colored sketch artwork showing Bambi and friends in various key scenes from the original film.

Walt Disney Signature Infant
The exclusive Walt Disney Signature infant brand blends classic elements in a fresh and modern way embracing Walt Disney's spirit of fun and freedom. The result is a luxurious collection of gift, seasonal and apparel items that are vintage-inspired, eclectic and of the finest quality. The line features rich and shaded color palette classics made of cashmere, pima cotton, silk voile, and linen, complemented by sketchbook and silhouette artwork, story-telling patchwork and iconic graphics and appliqués. The Walt Disney Signature infant line will debut in November and will be available only at high-end department stores and specialty boutiques.

Carolwood Pacific Historical Society Invites Disney Fans to Meet Disney Legend Blaine Gibson May 21

Blaine Gibson is the legendary Disney artist who was selected by Walt to be his master sculptor. Results of his unique talent are in the collections of the Disney family, the Smithsonian, the White House and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. He created the gold coin of Walt that was struck by the U.S. Treasury and also struck in bronze and used to raise funds to build Cal Arts.

He will bring samples of his sculptures and sign autographs and pieces on May 21st.

The Barn, located at the Los Angeles Live Steamers in Griffith Park, is open 11 am to 3 pm. Admission and parking are free.

After animating all day at The Walt Disney Studios, Blaine Gibson would go home at night and sculpt, this had been a favorite hobby of his since childhood. Then, in 1954, Walt Disney happened to see one of Blaine's art exhibits, which featured several animal sculptures, and recruited him to work on special projects for his new theme park, Disneyland.

Blaine was somewhat ambivalent about being diverted from his goal to establish himself as one of the Studio's foremost animators. As he recalled in 1995, "I didn't think it was that important (of a job), but then I was told Walt was expecting me to work on these projects. So I said to myself, 'what the heck' and went (to Walt Disney Imagineering). I was never sorry after that."

In the beginning, Blaine divided his time between sculpting and animating for the Company, until 1961, when he transferred to the design and development division to supervise the newly-created sculpture department, full-time. Ultimately, Blaine went on to make a name for himself in 3-D animation, creating hundreds of sculptures from which Audio-Animatronics figures and bronzes were produced for exhibits in the 1964-65 New York World's Fair and Disney theme parks around the world. Among his credits, Blaine contributed to such attractions as Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, and Enchanted Tiki Room. He also sculpted all 42 U.S. Presidents for the Hall of Presidents at Walt Disney World.

Born February 11, 1918, in Rocky Ford, Colorado, Blaine attended Colorado University, but left school to join The Walt Disney Studios in 1939. While working as an inbetween artist and assistant animator, he took evening classes in sculpture at Pasadena City College and studied with a private instructor. Among his animation credits are "Fantasia," "Bambi," "Song of the South," "Alice in Wonderland,' "Peter Pan," "Sleeping Beauty," and "101 Dalmatians."

After nearly 45 years with The Walt Disney Company, Blaine retired in 1983. He has, however, continued to consult on such projects as The Great Movie Ride at Disney-MGM Studios in Florida. In 1993, the same year he was named a Disney Legend, Blaine created a life-size bronze of Walt and Mickey Mouse standing hand in hand. The statue, called "Partners," is located at the Central Hub in Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Premieres in Primetime on May 5th

"Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," the first Mickey Mouse series created specifically for preschoolers, will premiere in a special primetime presentation FRIDAY, MAY 5 (7:30 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel and, in its regular timeslot, SATURDAY, MAY 6 (9:00 a.m., ET/PT) during the learning-focused Playhouse Disney programming block. In a coordinated global launch, the series will premiere on 22 Disney Channels and 5 Playhouse Disney channels across North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Japan reaching over 100 countries.

"Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" introduces a whole new generation of kids to the iconic character who has captivated people around the globe for over 75 years. With character designs referential to classic 1940s drawings, "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" is the first 3D computer-animated TV series starring the "Sensational Six": Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Daisy Duck and Donald Duck.

In each episode of "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," Mickey and his pals go on captivating capers that blend humor, classic storytelling and lively music with early-learning fundamentals. Preschoolers enter a fun-filled interactive world that combines today's state-of-the-art computer animation with the characters' timeless spirit of exuberance and optimism. The series is produced by Walt Disney Television Animation and a team of children's entertainment and child development experts led by executive producer Bobs (cq) Gannaway.

"Mickey and the 'Sensational Six' have entertained kids for generations, and we're thrilled to introduce them to an entirely new audience of preschoolers," said Gary Marsh, President, Entertainment, Disney Channel Worldwide. "Their playful spirit appeals to the kid in all of us, and kids, parents, grandparents and caregivers alike will enjoy seeing their favorite childhood characters come to life in these new clubhouse adventures that also teach important learning skills."

"Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" is punctuated by toe-tapping music, a core component of Disney's legacy. The series' opening theme and its recurring "Hot Dog!" song are written and performed by the Grammy Award-winning rock group They Might Be Giants.

The series is guided by a specific curriculum designed to introduce problem solving and early mathematics skills to preschoolers in a fun way. Interactivity is key from start to finish as Mickey speaks directly to young viewers, asking questions and encouraging them to play games, participate in special phrases or cheers, and to solve puzzles to reach a goal.

Several episodes feature a re-telling of a classic fairy tale such as Jack & the Beanstalk, starring Donald Duck, or Little Red Riding Hood starring Minnie Mouse. Recurring favorite characters include Professor Von Drake, Clarabelle Cow, Chip & Dale and Mickey's perennial nemesis, Pete the Cat.

The episodes kick-off with Mickey inviting viewers to join him calling out the "magic" phrase, "Meeska, Mooska, Mickey Mouse!" and with that, the fantastic, mouse-shaped structure that serves as the series' shape-shifting home base magically appears. As the show's host and Clubhouse's leader, Mickey introduces a daily theme and enlists the participation of viewers at home in interactive problem-solving adventures. Mickey and the audience are helped in achieving their goals by a retro-futuristic computer called the Mousekedoer, by the helpful Mouseketools, and by the transportable device called Toodles playful gizmos and gear that reinforce the series' early-learning concepts.

After successfully completing each adventure, the Sensational Six return to the Clubhouse, where Mickey recaps the fun activities and lessons learned with the celebratory "Hot Dog!" song. At the end, Mickey turns to the audience and, with a wave and a wink, he promises to "See Ya Real Soon."

The executive producer of "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" is Bobs (cq) Gannaway (the Emmy Award-winning Disney's "Mickey MouseWorks," Disney's "House of Mouse," and the Emmy Award-winning "101 Dalmatians: The Series"). Leslie Valdes is the producer and story editor and Rob LaDuca and Sherie E. Pollack are directors. Michael Himelstein and Michael Turner are the composers. "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" is from Walt Disney Television Animation.

"Daisy-Bo-Peep" Primetime Premiere Friday, May 5, 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT)

In the primetime premiere episode, Daisy Duck has lost Little Bo Peep's sheep and doesn't know where to find them. Just then, Pluto and one of the sheep appear, and Mickey hatches a plan to locate the wandering animals. While Mickey and young viewers are using their counting, shape and color recognition skills to round up Daisy's sheep, Donald Duck and Goofy get into some comical mishaps. With added help from some handy Mouseketools, and chipmunk "guest stars" Chip and Dale, Mickey and his friends find all the sheep and end the day with a musical celebration.

Now in its 21st year, Walt Disney Television Animation is an industry leader in the production of quality animated properties for television. Walt Disney Television Animation has nearly a dozen series in production and over 50 projects in various stages of development.

Walt Disney Records Escorts You Down Memory Lane with Pop/Jazz Vocalist Supreme Steve Tyrell: The Disney Standards

Acclaimed standards vocalist Steve Tyrell and the industry's #1 family music label are proud to present a heartwarming new collaboration - Steve Tyrell: The Disney Standards. The release makes its debut in stores February 28, 2006 on Walt Disney Records.

Steve Tyrell: The Disney Standards pays loving tribute to the richly varied musical memories originally created for the Disney animated features cherished around the globe. Respected as a torch-bearer for the preservation of The Great American Songbook, Tyrell takes to the canon of Disney classics with mastery and ease. The earthen warmth and character of his instantly recognizable voice are a perfect fit for these character-driven movie masterpieces. "They're not a complete departure from what I do," Tyrell says of the Magic Kingdom classics, "yet they're unlike anything I've ever done."

The 14-song CD will be cross-promoted with a touching music video clip for the song "Bella Notte" that will be included as a bonus feature on every copy of the inaugural 50th Anniversary Special Edition DVD of Lady and The Tramp (which will be released in stores the same day as The Disney Standards). Among the highlights of the charming CD is a duet with native New Orleans music superstar Dr. John - also in possession of an unmistakable voice - on a rollicking rendition of "You've Got a Friend in Me," the delightful ditty penned by renowned Randy Newman for the 1995 movie Toy Story. Tyrell remarks, "I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to sing this great song with my buddy Mac Rebennack (the good Dr.'s real name), who I have been friends with since I started my career back in the '60s."

For The Disney Standards, Steve (with the assistance of his daughters Tina and Lauryn) personally selected Disney songs spanning a variety of moods, including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" (from Cinderella), "Baby Mine" (from Dumbo), "Beauty and the Beast," "Cruella De Vil" (from 101 Dalmatians), "Kiss the Girl" (from The Little Mermaid), "Once Upon a Dream" (from Sleeping Beauty) and "When She Loved Me" (from Disney-Pixar's Toy Story 2). Also featured on Steve Tyrell: The Disney Standards are trumpeter Chris Botti (on "When You Wish Upon a Star" from Pinocchio) and alto saxophonist Dave Koz (on the Phil Collins-penned "You'll Be in My Heart" from Tarzan). Tyrell will add many of these song gems to his burgeoning concert standards repertoire throughout the year, including key shows with the Boston Pops, the Houston Symphony and a European summer tour.

Ever since his serendipitous on-screen performance of "The Way You Look Tonight" in the 1991 Buena Vista film Father of the Bride, behind-the-scenes TV and movie music pioneer Steve Tyrell has been successfully pursuing a long-desired singing career. He has released five albums saluting The Great American Songbook - all Top 5 Billboard jazz charters - including his 2005 Songs of Sinatra set.

On February 28, 2006, Steve Tyrell: The Disney Standards will be available for a suggested retail price of $18.98 wherever music is sold. All Walt Disney Records and Buena Vista Records audio products also can be ordered by visiting DisneyRecords.com. For more information, please visit SteveTyrell.com.

Card Walker, Disney Company Head from 1971 - 1983, Dies at 89

OBIT/E. CARDON WALKER, DISNEY'S CORPORATE LEADER FROM 1971-1983, WHO ESTABLISHED EPCOT, TOKYO DISNEYLAND AND DISNEY CHANNEL, DIES AT AGE 89; SUCCEEDED CO-FOUNDER ROY O. DISNEY E. Cardon "Card" Walker, who led The Walt Disney Company   for nearly a decade and a-half following the death of co-founder Roy O. Disney, passed away at his La Canada home on Monday, November 28, at the age of 89.

Walker rose through the ranks at Disney, starting in the mailroom in 1938 and eventually becoming executive vice president and chief operating officer following the death of Walt Disney. Walker worked closely with Walt and Roy Disney on memorable projects, such as It's a Small World, Meet Mr. Lincoln, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, "101 Dalmatians," "The Jungle Book," "Mary Poppins" and the purchase and development of the 28,000 acres in Central Florida that became Walt Disney World.

In 1971, he was named president of the company, in 1976, he added the duties of chief executive officer and, in 1980, he was elected chairman of the board. Under his leadership, the company expanded with such major projects as the development of EPCOT at Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland and the creation of the Disney Channel in the then-nascent cable industry.

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Card Walker," said Robert Iger, president and CEO of The Walt Disney Company. "Card was instrumental in keeping Disney strong and growing in the critical years that followed the passing of founders Walt and Roy Disney. There is little question that, were it not for Card Walker's vision and leadership, Disney would not be what it is today."

"Card was a predecessor of mine as CEO and I was privileged to consult with him throughout much of my tenure at the company," said Michael D. Eisner, former CEO of The Walt Disney Company. "Thanks to his deep understanding of the company and its founders, talking to Card was the next best thing to talking to Walt himself. Card successfully steered this company through a challenging time of transition, establishing an incredibly strong base for success on which Disney continues to build."

Earlier in his career, Walker's duties included work in the camera and story departments as unit manager on short subjects, after which he moved into advertising and sales, rising to become the company's vice president of marketing. In 1960, he was elected to Disney's board of directors and served on its three-man executive committee. He retired as CEO and chairman in 1983, but continued to serve as a consultant until 1990.

Among Walker's many awards and honors were Pioneer of the Year from the Foundation of Motion Picture Pioneers, the International Showmanship Award from the National Association of Theater Owners and the Alumnus of the Year Award from UCLA.

Walker was born January 9, 1916 in Rexburg, Idaho and moved to Southern California in 1924. He died of congestive heart failure and is survived by Winnie, his wife of 59 years, as well as three children, Mignonne Walker Decker, Marnie Gaede and Cardon Walker, and five grandchildren, Katie, Matt, Dylan, Marcus and Miles.

Funeral services will be private. Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the Motion Picture & Television Fund, 22212 Ventura Blvd., Suite 300, Woodland Hills, CA 91364.
