A Sneak Peek at the New California Grill Menu
The California Grill will be closing on February 1st for an extensive refurbishment bringing in new decor, a new kitchen and a new menu. It won't be reopening until later summer, but Disney Parks Blog author Pam Brandon already has a sneak peek at the new menu .

Contempo Cafe Closed for Refurbishment Until Aug 27
Disney has announced that the Contempo Cafe, the quick service restaurant at the Contemporary Resort, will be closed today through Sunday, reopening on Monday, August 27th. During this time a smaller version will be set up in the Grand Republic rooms A and B on the second floor from 7a to midnight. In addition, the Sand Bar will have extended hours, 11a tp 11p. For those with refillable mugs, the Contempo Cafe beverage station will remain open (there is also one at the Sand Bar and the Grand Republic rooms A and B)

Check-In Changes Coming for Bay Lake Tower Guests
Disney has announced they are in the process of relocating arrival at the Contemporary Resort's Bay Lake Tower to the Tower itself (currently all check-ins are in the Contemporary's main tower). The Bay Lake Tower will be staffed from 7a to 10p daily with all front desk and concierge duties available. The new front desk will be open starting August 20th. Note: Guests arriving via Disney's Magical Express will still be dropped off in front of the main tower and will check-in there.

RFID Payment Terminal Set Up at the Contemporary Resort
WDWMagic.com has a photo of a new payment terminal at the Contemporary Resort that is setup to do regular card swipes or cards with an RFID chip. According to their post, once the NextGen roll out begins later this year, guests will be able to charge to their room by simply touching their room key to the terminal.

California Grill to Shut Down For Six Months
The Orlando Sentinel writes Disney's California Grill at the Contemporary Resort will be closing for a six month refurbishment starting January 6, 2013.

Disney World Cancels Plans for Contemporary Resort Wellness Suites
Back in April Walt Disney World announced they would be converting some of the rooms in the Contemporary Resort into Wellness Suites...
These suites will feature bamboo flooring, 100-percent cotton linens, non-allergenic wrapped mattresses – as well as great views of Magic Kingdom Park and Bay Lake. Bathrooms on this floor also will be equipped with rainwater showers and tea tree oils
Guests staying in these suites also can enjoy the benefit of having cardio equipment right in their room. And they’ll have daily access to seasonal and organic fresh foods at the concierge lounge, and can enjoy yoga sessions and spa treatments at the resort’s renovated wellness studio.
Disney has now announced those plans have been modified. The wellness concepts will no longer be included though the refurbishment will go on with most of the design concepts previously shown being utilized. The renovations will take place in 2013.

Beginning this fall, guests looking for some rest and relaxation can indulge in new health and wellness suites, which will debut at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. These suites will feature bamboo flooring, 100-percent cotton linens, non-allergenic wrapped mattresses – as well as great views of Magic Kingdom Park and Bay Lake. Bathrooms on this floor also will be equipped with rainwater showers and tea tree oils.

Exciting enhancements also are taking place over at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort, with 512 Royal Guest Rooms planned to debut by March 2012. The story behind these lush rooms is that Princess Tiana (“The Princess and The Frog”) invited some of her royal pals – Belle (“Beauty and the Beast”), Jasmine (“Aladdin”) and more – for a vacation getaway. Princes and princesses of all ages can enjoy their luxurious lodging quarters, which will include ornate beds that feature headboards with fiber-optic special effects, and gold and crystal accents. Guests also can enjoy artwork and special mementos left by Tiana’s royal friends.

Disney World Testing Free Wi-Fi at The Contemporary
Starting today Disney World is testing free Wi-Fi access in cerain adreas of the Contemporary Resort. The access will be available in the lobby, main pool area, The Wave restaurant and lounge and the Convention Center common areas. Other areas of the hotel that aren't currently covered by this test can continued to use wireless access (in common areas) and wired access (in guest rooms) at the current $9.95 per day rate.

12 hurt when 2 Disney busses crash

Vintage Contemporary Construction
The 2719 Hyperion blog has a very interesting article - with pictures and an old video clip - on the construction of the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World in 1971. The rooms for the Contemporary were constructed at a separate site and inserted into the proper places within the building making for a very unusual building process. Click here to see the article.
