Disney archivist Dave Smith comments on Small World debate

LaughingPlace.com received the following letter from Dave Smith, Chief Archivist for the Walt Disney Co.

With regard to the current controversy about changes being made in It's a Small World at Disneyland, allow me, as the Chief Archivist at the Disney company for the past 38 years, to remind those who are complaining that Walt Disney never intended Disneyland to be static. To a reporter when Disneyland opened he said, "Disneyland will never be completed; it will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world." He continued those thoughts to Pete Martin who was working on his biography, saying that Disneyland is "something that will never be finished. Something I can keep developing, keep plussing and adding to. It's alive. It will be a live, breathing thing that will need change. A picture is a thing, once you wrap it up and turn it over to Technicolor you're through. The one I wrapped up a few weeks ago, it's gone, I can't touch it. I wanted something alive, something that could grow, something I could keep plussing with ideas; the Park is that. Not only can I add things, but even the trees will keep growing. The things will get more beautiful each year." Walt Disney was constantly changing his park, just as he said he would. And those changes did not end with Walt's death over 40 years ago. The Disney Imagineers have continued to follow his dream, frequently adding and changing things in the park to give today's guests the best possible experience. The public expects more from Disney than they do from most companies, and we try to live up to that trust by continually improving a guest's visit to our park. And, sure enough, those trees have kept growing and getting more beautiful every year.

As a follow-up we asked him this question:

I've read many people who have said they're not opposed to change in Small World - or anywhere at Disneyland for that matter - but they are opposed to this specific change. While obviousy none of them know exactly what will be done, the addition of characters to what has up until now been a character free attraction is itself a change they are opposed to. Many feel it changes the focus away from "children of the world" to "Disney characters" and that's not what Small World is supposed to be about. Is that something you might be able to speak to?

Dave Smith answered the following

It is difficult for me to speak to that, since I do not know what characters are being put in the attraction, or what they will look like. But, we have added characters to previous character-free attractions: witness Pirates of the Caribbean (Jack Sparrow), Tiki Room (Iago, at the Magic Kingdom in FL), Treehouse (Tarzan), Big Thunder Ranch (Little Patch of Heaven), Tom Sawyer Island (Pirates Lair), Main Street Cinema (Disney cartoons), Haunted Mansion (Haunted Mansion Holiday), Submarine Voyage (Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage), El Rio del Tiempo (Gran Fiesta Tour, at Epcot), The Living Seas (starring Nemo and Friends, Epcot). Because of the great number of Audio-Animatronics children in Small World, I cannot imagine that the addition of a few characters like Alice in Wonderland will affect the theme.

Disney/Pixar’s Critically Acclaimed Animated Favorite ‘‘Ratatouille’’ Garners Five Oscar® Nominations

Ratatouille, the critically acclaimed computer-animated feature from Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios, received five Academy Award® nominations today, the most ever for a Disney/Pixar film. In addition to being a nominee for Best Animated Feature Film, the film also earned Oscar®-winning director Brad Bird (The Incredibles) a second nomination in the Original Screenplay category (screenplay by Brad Bird; story by Jan Pinkava, Jim Capobianco, Brad Bird). Bird had previously been nominated for Best Original Screenplay for his work on The Incredibles. Ratatouille also received nominations today in the following categories: Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score) for composer Michael Giacchino; Achievement in Sound Editing (Randy Thom and Michael Silvers); and Achievement in Sound Mixing (Randy Thom, Michael Semanick and Doc Kane). This represents the 5th and 6th nominations in the sound editing and mixing categories, respectively, for a Disney/Pixar animated film (Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles received a total of four Sound nominations).

Tales from the Laughing Place website launched

We call it reverse evolution. Today all of us at Tales are proud to launch our new website for the magazine http://www.talesfromthelaughingplace.com A bit of a mouthful for sure but it is exactly what it says it is. In this age of instant digital information we were told that the old world of print media that had served as our source of commentary for centuries was stagnant and possibly even dying. However we respectfully disagreed. There will always be a human desire for a tactile and real response to information. To be able to touch and feel it. To be a distraction from our iPods or BlackBerrys. To appreciate the printed word for the artistic sensibilities applied to the piece in an ad and pop-up free world that is uncluttered but unadulterated. To keep it forever as a reminder of a time. Something visible on that shelf rather than archived in an anonymous folder buried in another folder or even lost in those systematic and data-destroying crashes that Microsoft conspiracy theorists tell us are built in deliberately.

We started as a website. A fan site if you will that would collate news about the most creative corporate concern in the world today. A place where people could congregate electronically to tell their tales about life and impart points-of-view on anything conceivably (well within Community standards!). The worldwide web enables every single user to be on a level playing field and seek out what they will. Want opening grosses for Pirates 2 in the UK? Want to see photos of the eleventh Disney theme park's grand opening? Want to order Tokyo Disneyland merchandise on eBay? It is accessible by all at a touch of a button. Instant gratification that has ensnared us all. Every generation has a use for it.

So we evolved backwards. It may not have been what Darwin envisaged but it is still about seeing a gap and exploiting a market. Nine issues ago we launched Tales into the void left by the Disney Magazine. However we imbedded our own DNA with more in-depth stories, unique photography, an upscale design approach and a quality stock that enabled us to tell the stories of the creative artists that call the Walt Disney Company home. We were right to think that a niche publication could have a life outside the web. None of us had any tangible experience of running a print organization but after five years of being a web only concern we wanted to spread our wings.

However we wanted a presence to show everyone what we could do. Now as we have a body of work behind us we are pleased to be able to showcase that work as a testimony to our dedication to Tales.

Feel free to browse through and let us know if you have any comments or suggestions. Initially the site is fairly simple with an emphasis on the design approach that has served us well to date but we will be tweaking it over time. From the web to the printed word and back to the web. That is our evolution.

Tales can only exist thanks to the unwavering support of the entire Walt Disney Company and the enthusiasm of our readers. Our next issue is our tenth and we have some amazing new stories to tell like Finding Nemo - the Musical at Disney's Animal Kingdom and the fifteenth anniversary of Disneyland Paris. More exclusive artwork and original photography. Brand new tales to tell. Plus our first double cover release featuring either of those Tales. Just another first and exclusive coming your way in '07.
