Cirque du Soleil Theatre Tokyo ZED to Close

From an Oriental Land Co. Press Release...

Oriental Land Co., Ltd. and Cirque du Soleil have reached an  agreement to indefinitely close the Cirque du Soleil Theatre Tokyo, located in Tokyo Disney Resort®.  Performances of ZED will end on December 31, 2011.

“ZED” premiered on October 1, 2008 at Cirque du Soleil’s first permanent theater in Japan and was set for an indefinite long run at this venue.  It proved to be very popular and reached the one-millionth guest milestone faster than any other show in Japan.  Through the over 1,000 performances of “ZED,” many people were provided with an additional new way to  enjoy Tokyo Disney Resort.

It is with regret, however, that due to the effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the business environment for this theatre greatly changed.  Based on a review of the expected results and the long-term viability of the show, it was mutually agreed that the business environment would remain extremely difficult; therefore, it was decided to close the show.

Accordingly, the current business partnership with Cirque du Soleil for “ZED” will be dissolved. A study on future use of the theatre facility will be conducted at a later date.  Cirque du Soleil will proceed to the redeployment of its staff and artists

Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade Dreamlights Updated

Thanks to TDLFAN for posting the following on our Discussion Boards...

TDL's Dreamlights Parade received 4 new floats this past week when the parade returned from a short hiatus. Two floats are now themed to Aladdin, one float for Toy Story and one dedicated to Tinkerbell and pixie friends.. Not only are there these new floats but floor performers have also received new costumes at these units, to enhance the quality of the show. Below is a video, but of course, the person recording it must be a character centric fan since too much zooming into the characters was done, and not enough time was allocated to enjoy the overall look of the floats.. but at least you get the idea.

A video of the updated parade is below.

Tokyo Disney Resort's MiraCosta Hotel Goes 100% Non-Smoking

The following was posted by Discussion Board user SuperDry...

Hotel MiraCosta now 100% non-smoking. Yay! TDLH was this way since opening, but the MiraCosta has been a mix. There's been more than one occasion where I've stayed somewhere else simply because the only available rooms at the MiraCosta were smoking ones. Hopefully, with the hotel closed 45 days, they've had a chance to thoroughly deep clean the formerly smoking rooms. I've stayed in a converted hotel before, at least a year after conversion, and the former smoking floors still reeked. The Ambassador appears to still have a mix of smoking and non-smoking rooms.

Tokyo Disneyland Reopening Attendance Numbers

Resort Cruise on our Discussion Boards has an extensive post about the attendance numbers at Tokyo Disneyland for its reopening last week. An excerpt...

Attendance for Tokyo Disneyland's reopening after the Great Tohoku Earthquake of March 11th has come in well below official expectations. On Friday April 15th, the park's reopening day and also its 28th anniversary, Oriental Land Company's estimate was that 45,000 guests would be in attendance. (Such estimates are normally given to certain cast members in order for them to adjust operations accordingly.) The actual attendance was between 16 and 17 thousand.

Please see More Information below for more details and reasons given by guests for the disappointment and also please note the source for this is unofficial.

Effects as of March 18 of the Tohoku Pacific Earthquake

Oriental Land Co., Ltd. would first like to send our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by the Tohoku Pacific Earthquake on March 11, 2011. From our heart, we pray for the health and well-being of everyone, and hope for the earliest possible recovery of the affected areas.

We would also like to notify the effects of the earthquake on our company, summarized as follows:

1. Casualties and Damages

(1) Casualties
As previously notified on March 14, there have been no injuries or casualties reported among our guests, Cast Members and other employees.

(2) Damages

a. Tokyo Disneyland / Tokyo DisneySea Parks
There was no major damage to buildings and facilities, nor was there any ground liquefaction*1 inside the Parks except for a portion of the parking area. Following full inspections, the safety of all buildings and facilities inside the Parks has been confirmed and the Parks are in condition for re-opening.
However, due to the lack of stable electricity supply and other concerns, we have determined to further postpone the opening of the Parks. The reopening of the Parks will be duly announced when the date has been determined.
*1: Liquefaction has only occurred in a portion of the flat parking areas. Recovery efforts are swiftly underway.

b. Disney Hotels
There was no major damage to the buildings or facilities. Also, work on confirming the safety of the hotels has been completed.
The date of re-opening is not yet determined, as the hotels are scheduled to reopen at the same time as the Parks.

c. Ikspiari There was no major damage to the buildings or facilities. Also, work on confirming the safety of Ikspiari has been completed. The date of re-opening is not yet determined.

d. Disney Resort Line There was no major damage to the buildings or facilities. Although there is no impediment to the monorail operations, the date of resuming operations will be determined depending on the status of the other facilities within Tokyo Disney Resort.

e. Cirque du Soleil Theatre Tokyo Although there was no major damage to the building or facilities, inspection of the equipment is still ongoing. The date of re-opening is not yet determined.

2. Effects on our Business Results
Effects from this earthquake to our buildings and facilities were negligible. We are currently reviewing the ramifications to our business results due to the closure of the Parks and other facilities.

Tokyo Disney Resort Japan Earthquake Update - March 15

Posted today on the Disney Parks Blog...

First and foremost, our hearts go out to all of the people in Japan who have been impacted by last week’s devastating earthquake in Japan. In response to this disaster, The Walt Disney Company is making a $2.5 million contribution to the Red Cross to help aid in the disaster relief. The company has also coordinated a charitable giving program for all Disney employees and will match donations, dollar for dollar, up to an additional $1 million.

In regards to our theme park operations, Tokyo Disney Resort will remain closed this week so that a comprehensive safety investigation can be performed. While there was only minimal damage to the resort, the safety of our guests and cast members is always our top priority so we want to be as thorough as possible in our inspections. The quake caused considerable damage to the local infrastructure and transportation systems in the area so we need to take that into account as well. Fortunately, all of the guests who were at the resort when the quake hit have been able to leave despite these transportation challenges.

A decision regarding operations at the Tokyo Disney Resort will be made on March 21 and we will continue to post updates on the Disney Parks Blog as the situation progresses. The thoughts and good wishes of the entire Disney company go to our colleagues in Japan, their friends and families and all of the Japanese people as they begin their recovery efforts in this difficult time.

Disney's Official Statement on How the Earthquake Has Affected Parks and Operations

From the Official Disney Parks Blog...

As many of you know, an 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck near the coast of Japan on Friday and Tokyo Disney Resort was one of the many areas affected. Fortunately our team on the ground has reported only minor injuries and minimal property damage at Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. The safety of our guests and cast members is always our first concern so both parks will remain closed on Saturday to allow for a thorough inspection of our attractions and facilities. Cast members at the Tokyo Disney Resort are also providing humanitarian aid in the form of blankets, food and water for guests who are still at the resort due to the transportation challenges associated with the earthquake.

Because of the quake’s effect on the waters of the Pacific, the Disney Wonder’s itinerary was altered slightly due to the closure of the Port of Cabo. Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, currently under construction in Ko Olina, Hawai’i, was not impacted.

Our thoughts and sympathy go out to our guests, fellow Disney cast members and all of the people in Japan affected by this terrible disaster. We’ll share any additional information today by posting updates at the top of this

Japan Hit By Major Earthquake and Tsumani. Tokyo Disneyland Resort Affected.

The major earthquake that hit Japan has had an effect on the Tokyo Disneyland Resort. According to reports the car park has been hit by an effect called "liquefaction" causing it to be drenched with water-logged segments from the ground. There were 69,000 people in Tokyo Disneyland at the time but there are no reports of injuries. Twitter user Rezaikram has Tweeted a few pictures like the one below of guests camped out in the public areas of the park. He reports that guests have not been allowed to leave the park.

5:00AM Pacific Time Update: Disney Parks Creative Entertainment exec Steven Davison (who is at Tokyo Disneyland for Fantasmic rehearsals) posted on his Facebook page that they have been told the parks will be closed on Saturday so officials can inspect for damage.

Disney's Aulani hotel (still under construction) is on the side of Hawaii that faces Japan so that is something to watch as the tsunami from the earthquake approaches Hawaii. It's due to reach the island at 5:07 AM Pacfiic Time.
