Changes Are Coming to the Polynesian Resort

On Oct 1 1971 Walt Disney World came into being as a operating resort. With a theme park, 2 hotels and a camp ground, a part of Walt’s dream was made a reality thanks to his brother Roy. In the past almost 43 years Walt Disney World has grown well beyond, I am sure, what Walt could have even imagined. But still to this day those first 2 hotels and campground still operate. I plan to give a look at those opening day locations over time, but today I wanted to start with my favorite, Disney’s Polynesian Resort.

Opened as the Polynesian Village, the Poly as most call it, has gone through many changes over the years from expansions to of course a name change. In 1985 after a large scale remodel with the addition of two long houses it became known as the Disney’s Polynesian Resort. For the past almost two decades not many changes have taken place at the Poly. Sure, a volcano took shape in the pool area and you could no longer swim in the Seven Seas Lagoon, but overall the hotel was basically the same.

In 2013 work started for a upgrade of all the rooms which Disney does for all the hotels on a rotating cycle, but word got out that it was going to be more than just the normal room freshening. A Disney Vacation Club resort was announced to be added to the existing property and with that addition a large overhaul of the lobby, the Great Ceremonial House, and Nanea Volcano Pool area.  Along with Sunset Point, a peaceful area that was used for weddings and firework viewing, the Tahiti and Rapa Nai Longhouses were to be used for the locations for the new DVC rooms.
