“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” Kicks Off at El Capitan with Costumes and Special Guests

Long lines wrapped down Hollywood Boulevard on both sides of the El Capitan Theater in anticipation of Guardians of the Galaxy Double Feature, including the debut of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The early 3:00 p.m. start time was not a barrier to almost a full audience. Later, director James Gunn jumped back in surprise and joy upon looking up and noticing there was a full balcony of fans cheering his efforts.

Before that, upon entry, each guest received a commemorative popcorn bucket and beverage. In the lobby, there is a costume worn by Michael Rooker (Yondu) and a fun photo op area. Then the pre-show included a DJ who also was Master of Ceremonies, playing music from both soundtracks to energize the audience.

A random drawing of prizes preceded the costume contest. A few lucky audience rows were all winners; one receiving the new Disneyland Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 popcorn bucket and another row won Ghirardelli ice cream!

The very first costume, a small Star-Lord ended up being the Grand Prize Winner receiving a full cast signed movie poster.

Introducing Vol.2 was director James Gunn and Pom Klementieff (Mantis). Michael Rooker (Yondu) also made an appearance in video form. With audience pumped up to see the new movie, the director thanked his first paying audience and was visibly buoyed by their enthusiasm.

Of course, the Disney Studio Store next door was also stocked with plenty of Guardians merch, including the adorable Baby Groot.

Guests purchasing tickets for the El Capitan run of the film have a variety of special packages. The VIP Ticket and Exclusive Comic Book package includes reserved seating, popcorn in a souvenir tub, bottled beverage, and an exclusive Marvel Studio’s Guardians of the Galaxy comic book. The VIP Groot Cup package includes reserved seating, popcorn in a souvenir tub, and a fountain beverage in a Groot collector cup with straw. There is also a Movie & Meal package tat includes dinner following the movie at the Hard Rock Café. During the first screening of each Tuesday the El Capitan hosts Tiny Tot Tuesdays, a child friendly screening with lights dimmed rather than out completely and reduced sound levels.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now playing in theatres everywhere.
