THE TOON TALK TOP 10 - 2010
The Year's Best Disney Films and DVDs

From classic animation to enlightening documentaries, Disney entertainment was full of unexpected surprises in 2010. Whether it was the eagerly anticipated returns of beloved characters or the shocking revelations of legendary icons, this year had a fair share of excitement and drama mixed in with the magic and fantasy.

Celebrating its 10th edition, here is the Toon Talk Top 10 of 2010:

#1 - TOY STORY 3

Walt Disney Pictures / Pixar Animation Studios

The third time was indeed the charm for Buzz and Woody and the gang from Andy’s room with this, their blockbuster concluding chapter of what is now the best movie trilogy of all time. Mining humor and pathos in equal measure, the family friendly hit is not only for all ages, but for the ages.

#2 - WAKING SLEEPING BEAUTY

Disney DVD

Longtime Disney producer Don Hahn (making his directorial debut) pulls back the curtain, no holds barred, on all the trials and tribulations behind the scenes of the “Disney renaissance” of the late 80s / early 90s. The result is an engrossing and thoroughly entertaining document of the not-so-distant Disney past.

#3 - BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Platinum Edition Disney Blu-ray

The “tale as old as time” got a state of the art make over in high definition… and never looked better. Includes the Bonus Feature of the Year, an in depth and heartfelt tribute to the late great lyricist Howard Ashman.

#4 - PONYO

Disney Blu-ray

Academy Award winning director Hayao Miyazaki, best known for such darker fantasies as Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, takes a lighter but no less masterful approach in his unique take on The Little Mermaid story. A pure delight.

#5 - THE BOYS: THE SHERMAN BROTHERS’ STORY

Disney DVD

The sons of the Oscar-winning songwriting team behind Mary Poppins, “It’s a Small World”, et al, offer up a warts-and-all portrait of their famous fathers. Candid and compelling, a “practically perfect” documentary.
