Animation Cels come in many including sericels, which are sometimes lithographed, limited edition cels which are numbered and hand painted, and production cels which were actually used in a Disney animated feature - these are the most valuable and treasured.

Let me explain the differences between the three types of cels I mentioned. Sericels are the most common. They are usually numbered or in a series - several hundred to several thousand can be made. And they are lithographed which is a color printing process. These can found at most Disney Stores. Limited edition cels are numbered but are hand painted by Disney artists like the watches that are hand done on Main Street in Disneyland and Walt Disney World. These can be found at the Disneyana Shop and other fine art dealers. Production cels are ones that were painted by the Disney Ink and Paint Department at the Walt Disney Studios. These cels were actually used in a production feature, like Snow White or Bambi. Production cels are one-of-a-kind. These cels, in my opinion, are the best and will continue to escalate in value. These cels can be found at some of the Galleries I have mentioned, and at other fine art dealers.

Always check with a knowledgeable person who knows cels before you buy one. I was once at a gallery and a woman was buying an animation cel of the queen from Snow White and she thought she was getting a production cel when she actually was getting a limited edition cel. She was going to pay about $3,000 for it. I had to say something and I told her what she was getting and suggested where she could get a production cel for the same price or less. So be careful what you buy as a production cel was made at the time the movie came out and a limited edition could have been made last week!

So no matter if your looking for a piece of history in a production cel or just want something of Disney that you can hang on your wall, you will find a Disney animation cel out there to fit your budget.

Barry's Biography
Hello, My name is Barry Allender. At age 12, I started to watch the Lakers and collected basketball cards. Basketball became my first love and I was hit with the collecting bug.

My interest expanded in 1975 when I was at Disneyland. I walked into the Disneyana shop and saw a 1950’s Donald Duck Cola bottle. I was hooked! Since 1975 I have collected almost every type of Disney memorabilia possible. Disney collecting is more popular than ever and the interest can be shared with family and friends.

Then in 1977 a little known movie got the world’s attention and myself - Star Wars. Then the collecting bug hit me again and for the last two decades I have collected Star Wars. I have seen the original movie over 300 times and I am thrilled at the fact that we now have even more to look forward too. Collecting Star Wars is now a growing avenue.

Today I am a writer for Toy Shop and the Disneyland correspondent for Tomart's Disneyana Update, so I visit Disneyland at least once a month. One day, if I’m lucky, I hope to write a book on Disney, Star Wars or Basketball, or maybe all three, or try to open my own toy business.
