Animation:

Animation Process: Explore the stages of computer animation, from story reel to layout to animation to simulation to shaders.

Early Tests: Rare footage of early animation tests (with commentary from technical animators Thomas Porter, Steve May and Michael Fong) including Mike with no arms and Sulley with glasses and tentacles for feet.

Opening Title Animation: The original treatment for the film had it beginning in the scare simulator, but it was decided that a more light-hearted opening was needed to set the correct tone for the film. The uniquely monikered Geefwee Boedoe stepped in to design and create the whimsically retro traditional animation seen in the finalized opening credit sequence.

Hard Parts: Every Pixar film to date has had to face some daunting technical challenges, and Monsters, Inc. was no different. New dynamic computer programs were created to solve such problems as the realism of Sulley’s fur to the look of Boo’s cotton shirt. Such innovations enabled the animators to concentrate on their character’s performances.

Shots Department: Another new department at Pixar created for this movie, the Shots Department is a combination of rendering and effects animators whose responsibility was to go through, frame by frame, each shot of the film to perfect every detail.

Production Demonstration: Use your angle button again to toggle between the original story reel, layout, animation and final color stages of George’s contamination scene.

Music and Sound:

Monster Song: See Goodman and Crystal recording Randy Newman’s ode to monster friendship, “If I Didn’t Have You”.

Sound Design: Step into Skywalker Sound, where all the sound effects for Monsters were created from scratch (and some from their own mouths … ).

Binaural Recording: Access special binaural recording demonstrations, including Goodman and Crystal goofing off in the Binaural Video and a Binaural Audio Comparison of Sulley’s work-out scene.

Release:

The Premiere: All the stars (including Buzz himself, Tim Allen), for the world premiere of Monsters, Inc. at the El Capitain Theater in Los Angeles.

Toys: See Lasseter and company at work: playing with toys inspired by their movie.

Posters: Gallery of the original theatrical posters, including teaser sheets, critically blurbs and holiday-themed artwork.

Outtakes: Another access point to the outtakes reel.

Trailers and TV Spots: Three theatrical trailers (including the teaser preview and the hilarious Charades spot) and four TV spots. (Note the use of The Doors’ “Break on Through” … get it, The Doors … ).

International Inserts: Every sign, magazine cover, headline, et cetera was re-done in different languages for the film’s international releases.

Multi-Language Clip Reel: These are always fun; hear Mike and Sulley in German, Japanese, Norwegian, French, Swedish, Polish, Italian, even Hebrew.
