lot #42 Lady & the Tramp Art Tile

As an animator Frank Thomas has a style that is distinct as it is homogeneous - whether as part of the team of Frank and Ollie or as a singular animator, his style is very humane. This two-piece art tile - which he re-drew for the medium and also acted as the color stylist - featured Lady and the Tramp from the Bella Notte scene and is hand signed. This is artist's proof No. 1.

Low Estimate: $1,000
High Estimate: $2,000
Medium: Mixed Media
Sold for: $2,000.00

lot #43 Mickey's Toon Town - Jolly Trolley

Another in a long line of ride vehicles to hit the ODC auction block - from Sky Way Buckets to Autopia cars and from Flying Dumbos to Toad’s car - ride vehicles have a very broad appeal to collectors. Again the ODC auction is the only vehicle through which these vehicles can be offered to the public.

This item also came with a warning from Disney legal "Items offered for sale are for display purposes only and should not be altered or modified. Materials of construction, including surface coatings, may contain hazardous materials that could create potential health concerns when disturbing or altering the surface or underlying materials -- e.g., machining, sanding, drilling, paint stripping, or cutting. No alterations or modifications that could disturb surface or underlying materials should be conducted without prior consultation with a hazardous-materials expert." So call has-mat before converting this Jolly Trolley into a picnic table.

lot #44 Flubber -Pre-Production Painting

It’s rare that a piece of pre-production set decoration concept art is made available and rarer still when the artist is Dick Hubbert, who was a senior illustrator in the Disney Studio Art Department at the from 1961 to 1964. Some pre-production art sets a theme for the shooting and are seemingly don-descript - not much to tell that it’s a Disney product, this piece, however, was a very Disney piece from the "The Absent-Minded Professor" with the Professor’s car hovering over the house.

Size: 26"H x 33"W
Artist: The Walt Disney Company
Low Estimate: $1,000
High Estimate: $2,000
Medium: Water Color
Sold for: $2,500.00

lot #45 Disneyland Letters - Dave Avanzino

A unique opportunity with this lot. I like Dave’s work very much - mostly because I couldn’t imagine that I’d ever have either the time, the creativity or the patience to do it - and because I like his use of distinctly Disneyland imagery in his creations. This framed set included his sculptures for Disneyland, Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Adventureland, Main Street USA and Frontierland.

Size: 21"H x 65"W
Artist: David Avanzino
Low Estimate: $5,000
High Estimate: $6,000

Sold for: $5,000.00

lot #46 Donald Medallion

The companion piece to the Mickey that was lot #20 - this Donald, a laurel wreath on his brow - was also created for the Disney Store in Florence, Italy - but was never installed.

Low Estimate: $2,000
High Estimate: $3,000
Medium: Bronze
Sold for: $2,500.00

lot #47 Walt's Restaurant New Year's Eve Menu Plate - Disneyland Paris Resort & Mickey Mouse "Paris Match" - Walt's Death

preview 06.JPG (22983 bytes)

One of the most unique lots in the entire auction and one that I was fascinated by - having visited DLP in 1997 and enjoyed a wonderful meal at the restaurant I could imagine such an event. Two items that would be quite difficult to acquire both available at the same time and at the same place - items that the ODC auction was created to feature.

The magazine - which featured a 14-page article chronicling the life of Walt Disney - is in good condition and had some wear on the binding edge with some writing on the cover, it was published by Publications Jean Prouvost, Paris and was released on December 24, 1966.

The 1996 New Year's Eve menu plate celebrated the meal served at Walt's, An American Restaurant, on Main Street USA at Disneyland Paris, it is inscribed on a typical serving charger plate made for Walt's by the celebrated Luxembourg fine china and porcelain firm Villeroy & Boch. Only 350 of these inscribed plates were produced for the event.

Size: 19"Wx 19"H
Artist: Disneyland Paris - Villeroy & Boch
Low Estimate: $500
High Estimate: $1,000
Medium: Porcelain
Sold for: $1,400.00

lot #48 Beauty & the Beast Original Painting

Another of Don "Ducky" Williams’ originals, this piece was created to be used as a holiday lithograph for WDW Resort Cast Members. And another blend of artist, purpose and subject that will effect the price.

Size: 23"H x 18" W Unframed
Artist: Don "Ducky" Williams
Low Estimate: $1,500
High Estimate: $2,000
Medium: Cel Vinyl, Acrylic, Air brush
Sold for: $5,000.00

lot #49 Cinderella Castle

preview 15.JPG (12652 bytes)

An item that would score very high on the "cool" scale as a collectable sculpture, this unique prototype was created as a cake topper for the Disney Gallery on November 4, 1999.

Size: 8-1/2"H x 6"W
Artist: The Disney Catalog
Low Estimate: $300
High Estimate: $500
Medium: Mixed Media
Sold for: $1,100.00

lot #50 Donald's Nightmare - Jack Hannah

This was a real find for the auction team - the combination of Hannah and Disney has a huge following - despite the fact that this image was a bit strange - OK I’m being polite - it was weird and a bit creepy. Jack Hannah was an animator and illustrator of Disney shorts for some 30 years and had a great deal of input into the creation of Donald’s personality. This painting was sure to meet its low estimate - it did, but didn’t sell for as much as I thought that it would. Sometimes the marketplace surprises me.

Size: 15-1/2"H x 13-1/2"W
Artist: Jack Hannah - he also framed this piece
Low Estimate: $2,500
High Estimate: $3,000
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Sold for: $2,750.00
