lot #51 Disney Storybook Art Cel from 1937

Yet another of the classic Walt Disney Studio storybook art production cels from 1937. This featuring Mickey. Did flooding the auction with like cels drive the prices down - this item didn’t even make its low estimate - in a room full of Mickey collectors.

lot #53 Disneyland Resort Framed Pin Set

preview 03.JPG (35842 bytes)

The pin trader in me loved this item - although I have many of the 180 rack, Resort exclusive and limited edition pins in my collection seeing them framed with Dave Avanzino’s logo work really worked for me. The pin cynic in me keeps checking e-Bay to see if any of the 20 one-of-a-kind, very rare or prototype pins have been offered for sale yet - such is the pin market.

lot #55 Up a Tree with Pooh & Friends

Another of Don "Ducky" Williams’ originals. This one also created to be distributed as a lithograph for WDW Resort Cast Members. As the company is featuring more and more Pooh merchandise it was surprising that this item was the only Winnie the Pooh character piece in the auction.

Low Estimate: $1,500
High Estimate: $3,000

lot #56. Jelly Bean Sign

Yes, jelly beans. Cuteness was the proviso for this item as the words "perishable" and "collectable" don’t often mix. This Gourmet Mickey sign was made and used for a promotion at Walt Disney World Resort's Downtown Disney MarketPlace. No one knew exactly how many beans were used in the making of the sign - I thought it was cute but not really "collectable". Someone else did as it sold for more than it’s high estimate.

Size: 4'Hx 6'W
Artist: Walt Disney Parks & Resorts - Walt Disney World Resort
Low Estimate: $600
High Estimate: $800
Medium: Jelly Beans
Sold for: $1,100.00

lot #57 Disney Storybook Art Cel from 1937

The groans from the audience were audible as the last of the 5 classic storybook art production cels produced by the Walt Disney Studio in 1937 was offered. Of the 5 lots offered, the last two auctioned sold for the lowest prices - character and condition not withstanding - if fewer had been offered the prices paid may have been larger. It’s difficult to market an item as "rare" when there are 5 items in an auction catalog of only 66 pieces.

Size: 13"H x 9"W
Artist: Walt Disney Publishing
Low Estimate: $3,000
High Estimate: $4,000
Medium: Cel Vinyl
Sold for: $2,250.00

lot #58 Tokyo Disneyland Props

preview 07.JPG (23328 bytes)

This year’s ODC being in California brought a great many Japanese collectors. These props were from TDL’s "Party Express" parade, which ran at the park to celebrate Walt Disney's 100th birthday. The lot was made-up of lamp-post signs and metal logo markers.

Low Estimate: $300
High Estimate: $400
Medium: Mixed Media
Sold for: $1,600.00

lot #59 Cruella De Vil

Another one-of-a-kind - but this a paper sculpture by Tim West. Cruella is the second in his ongoing Disney Villains series. Tim’s work - like Dave’s - is meticulously crafted and inventive. This piece was crafted from museum-grade archival paper, and depicts Cruella's entrance scene in Disney's 1961 masterpiece,"101 Dalmatians".

Size: 26"H x 30"W
Artist: Tim West
Low Estimate: $5,000
High Estimate: $7,000
Medium: Paper
Sold for: $8,000.00

lot #60 Walt Disney and Mickey Doll - "... It Was All Started by a Mouse"

preview 21.JPG (14982 bytes)

As with the Disney Store’s lot #4 and the Lilliput Lane piece in lot #33, this progression piece features the process as much as the product. This WDCC piece, in honor of Walt Disney's 100th birthday, is the 2001 WDCC members-only sculpture and is based on a classic image of Walt with a newly merchandised Mickey doll. A classic image is often the most important factor in the design and development of a collectable, if the image itself can grab the audience by their collective emotions then selling it is all the easier. As the selling point for this item testifies, both the image and the product surely grabbed someone’s heart.

Size: N/A
Artist: Walt Disney Classics Collection
Low Estimate: $2,000
High Estimate: $2,500
Medium: Mixed Media
Sold for: $10,000.00
