Toon Talk: From the Other Side - Looney Tunes: Back in Action

Alas, aside from some clever references to the classic shorts through music (the song “I Love to Singa?) and dialogue (“I think we took a wrong turn at Albuquerque?), Back in Action mostly smacks of missed opportunities (for example, with all these bad guys around, where’s my favorite, the Big Hairy Monster?). All this is very surprising considering the devotion to the characters of the men behind the camera. Its no question that director Joe Dante and animation director Eric Goldberg were influenced by the early Warner shorts in their own earlier work (Dante’s Gremlins films, Goldberg’s Genie in Aladdin and the flamingos in Fantasia 2000); Goldberg even claimed in early press for this film that this would be the “anti-Space Jam?. Then why the Tazmanian Devil fart jokes and rampant product placement? (A side note to screenwriter Larry Doyle: poking fun at product placement does not justify product placement.)

Considering the dismal early box office reports for the film’s opening weekend just passed, it appears that these Tunes may not be Back in Action again anytime soon any way, which is unfortunate, but may just be a blessing in disguise for us fans of their classic early work. Warners would do better by these beloved characters if they allowed them to ‘retire’ with some shred of their former glory intact … why beat a bunny into the ground?

Indeed Porky, this may be “all folks?.
