Toon Talk: Mulan 2

In this new ‘Toon Talk’ feature, I’ll briefly highlight a recommended film or DVD, outside of the Disney universe, of similar interest to the main subject.

If, in their current remake frenzy, Disney ever decides to do a live action version of Mulan, they need look no further for their heroine then Ziyi Zhang.

The young Chinese actress made quite an impact in her first big international success, Ang Lee’s Academy Award-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000, Columbia Tri-Star Home Video). She further proved her exotic action hero status (even though the former dancer has never been formally trained in martial arts) in two recent Oscar-nominated films from director Yimou Zhang Hero (2002, Buena Vista Home Video) and House of Flying Daggers (2004, available March 29th on Columbia Tri-Star Home Video). All three films come highly recommended, even for non-fans of the genre.
