Toon Talk: Classic Cartoon Favorites

In this new ‘Toon Talk’ feature, I’ll briefly highlight a recommended film or DVD, outside of the Disney universe, of similar interest to the main subject.

Like Disney’s Chip ‘n Dale, MGM had their own slapstick twosome, Tom and Jerry, who starred in their own incredibly successful and long-running animated series. Throughout the Forties and early Fifties, the cat and mouse duo dominated the Cartoon Oscars, winning an amazing seven Academy Awards in a ten-year period.

Last year, Warner Home Video released the first volume in a series of DVD collections titled The Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection, which assembles forty of their classic shorts, plus excerpts from the feature films Anchors Aweigh (starring Gene Kelly) and Dangerous When Wet (starring Esther Williams) and interviews with legendary creators William Hanna and a very candid Joseph Barbera.

Coming Soon in Toon Talk:

  • Travel back to Ancient China for the latest adventures of Disney’s favorite cross-dressing heroine in the video premiere Mulan II (February 1st).
  • Winnie the Pooh and the whole Hundred Acre Wood gang return for the new theatrical feature Pooh’s Heffalump Movie (February 24th).
  • One of Walt’s true masterpieces, Bambi, is feted in a new Platinum Edition DVD (March 1st).

And Coming Soon from Buena Vista Home Video:

  • Bernie Mac stars in the baseball comedy Mr. 3000 (February 1st).
  • The patriotic documentary America’s Heart and Soul is made available for general release on February 1st.
  • Two volumes of Growing Up with Winnie the Pooh: A Great Day of Discovery and Friends Forever (February 8th).
  • More Disney Princess fun with Disney Princess Stories: Volume 2 and Disney Princess Party: Volume 2 - Tales of Friendship (February 15th).
  • Three Studio Ghibli classics get the Special Edition treatment: The Cat Returns, Naussica of the Valley of the Wind and Porco Rosso (February 22nd).
