In this ‘Toon Talk’ feature, I’ll briefly highlight a recommended film or DVD, outside of the Disney universe, of similar interest to the main subject.

Two of the best super-hero films ever made also featured a dysfunctional family of sorts: X-Men (2000) and X2: X-Men United (2003, both available on DVDs from Fox Home Entertainment).

Both directed by The Usual Suspect’s Bryan Singer, the two films starred the most popular super group in comic book history, the uncanny X-Men, a group of mutant outcast heroes intent on saving the world that despises and fears them. Singer, along with such renowned actors as Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman (in his break-out role as the brooding hell raiser Wolverine), brought the Marvel Comic characters to the big screen with class and humor in addition to the requisite adventures.

Coming Soon in Toon Talk:

  • From Vanguard Films comes Valiant, a new computer animated comedy about a heroic carrier pigeon voiced by Ewan McGregor (April 15th).
  • Don’t panic! After many years, Douglas Adams’ seminal novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Galaxy finally makes it to the big screen (April 29th).
  • Pocahontas gets a two-disc 10th Anniversary Edition DVD, including a restored musical sequence sung by Mel Gibson (May 3rd).

And Coming Soon from Buena Vista Home Video:
  • Christopher Lambert and Emmanuelle Seigner star in the video game adventure Nirvana (March 1st).
  • Molly Ringwald and Eric Bogosian co-star in the comedy In the Weeds (March 1st).
  • Ryan Phillipe and Sarah Polley star in the psychological thriller The I Inside (March 1st).
  • Two recent box office favorites: Renee Zellweger’s comedy sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason; and Ladder 49, the firefighter drama starring John Travolta and Joaquin Phoenix (March 8th).
  • Back to school (in March?) with more TV on DVD favorites: Felicity: The Complete 4th Season, Popular: The Complete 2nd Season and Sweet Valley High: The Complete 1st Season (March 8th).
  • The Baby Einstein Company presents Baby Monet: Discovering the Seasons (March 8th).
  • In the “spirit of The Passion of the Christ�? comes The Gospel of John, newly available on a two-disc set that includes two versions of the film, including a never-before-seen two-hour cut (March 15th).
  • The recent Best Picture Oscar nominee, Finding Neverland, starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet (March 22nd).
  • Two new Playhouse Disney DVDs: JoJo’s Circus: Take a Bow! and JoJo’s Circus: Animal A Go-Go, as well as two new Disney Learning Adventures DVDs: Mickey’s Around the World in 80 Days and Mickey and the Beanstalk (March 22nd).
  • Tom Sizemore stars as Pete Rose in the ESPN original movie Hu$tle (March 29th).
  • More catalog titles on the way: The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin (starring Roddy McDowell and Suzanne Pleshette), The Barefoot Executive (starring Kurt Russell and a chimp), Lt. Robinson Crusoe, U.S.N. (starring Dick Van Dyke and an island) and Million Dollar Duck (starring Dean Jones and a, well, duck) (April 5th).
  • Robert Redford narrates the nature documentary Sacred Planet (April 5th).
And congratulations to this year’s Disney Oscar Winners:

In addition to the two wins for The Incredibles (the first Pixar film to win more then one Oscar, as well as the second year in a row that a Disney/Pixar film won the Animated Feature Award), congratulations are in order for two Miramax movies that also took home the gold on Oscar night:

  • Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator won five awards (the most for any film this year, including Best Picture victor Million Dollar Baby), including Cate Blanchett (who, by playing Katherine Hepburn in the film, is the first actor to win and Academy Award by playing a real Academy Award-winner) for Best Supporting Actress, as well as Cinematography, Editing, Art Direction and Costume Design.
  • And Finding Neverland, the fanciful biography of Peter Pan’s creator J.M. Barrie, won composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek the award for Original Score.
